I've been offered a 2.0lt 1988 DOHC Toyota Celica. I've no idea about mileage or how it's been looked after but it's free!!!

I was wondering if anyone new anything about these- what the engines are like: power/size/reliability. Whether it's FWD or RWD and can it be used as RWD if not. How easy it'd be to convert to carbs, etc. etc.

Any information would be greatly recieved!

In basic terms any engine can be made to run on carbs and converted to RWD from FWD. You need to know what it came from to find out more about it. In general Toyota make damned fine engines...very reliable....well nailed together and quite tunable....if you've got the dosh. Try Stuart Taylor Motorsport for info cos they have fitted a toyota engine to a locost with good results.

My mates also selling a 4age (1.6 16v) for £125 if anyone wasnt to go the Locorage route.
It'll rev up just like a blade but with a reverse (well up to 8500 anyway)

James, don't give up on a free engine. It's not that much of a problem, you can by a manifold for carbs and a plate to convert the bell housing to mate a ford t9 box from RAW (theres also a rally place does them and probably cheaper but i'd need to check the name of the firm at home).
If the management system is the same as the 4age it's already split into 3 separate systems and can easily be put on carbs.
I used to run a corolla rwd rally car and it was massive amounts of fun. There is also a contact through my motor club who buys up all rwd corollas and would have boxes, etc
Don't forget that the japs based the rwd corolla gt as an Escort rival and it comes with slippy diff and rear discs (rather crap though)as standard.
Thatis why they are an ideal donor car
I dare say that with a bit of electrical skill you could make the injection work,or better still could youget the loom.

Well I don't know which to go for now, I know the Pinto isn't best but sounds a lot simpler than this Toyota.

I've just got hold of the owner (that friend of a friend!) of this car and it's actually only the 1600 version but is 1989.
If anyone else wants it (it's in Yately near Farnborough) he's scrapping it tomorrow so mail me and I'll pass on your details etc.

It's red, 1989, 110K miles, electrical problem- sometimes won't start and it's a bit rusty.
