fuel tank mods?
blakep82 - 13/1/11 at 01:11 AM

ok, so i've noticed my fuel tank has a flat bottom, with the outlet facing out towards the passenger side of the car, you can see by the half circle i've filed out. the fuel pump, and carbs are on the driver side, if i was to turn the tank round, you can see the outlet will be obstructed by the steel hoop. not sure what its for, but its staying lol

the flat bottom may be an issue with the fuel pick up being clear of fuel on left hand corners. it is baffled though. is it worth drilling some holes in the bottom of the tank, having a small box sump welded on and having the outlet face out the driver side? the sump will only be like 4" square.

there is about 1.5" between the tank mounts and the ali plate. you can see the chassis tube between them.

good idea? worth the hassle? i need a tiny bit of welding made to the tank anyway.

If you are modding the tank anyway then I would say that it is the ideal time to put a small sump in there (but take care on ground clearance). That will certainly stop any fuel starvation on track and have the added bonus of shortening the pump inlet hose too.

I would only mod the tank if it's not had fuel in it.. If has had fuel you could fit an external swirl pot to get the air out if you have problems.. Most 7 tanks are simlar as they are long and thin across the car with generally a flat bottom but baffled...

it smells of something, not really petrol though. don't know what it is, but its not had petrol in the years i've had it, and i need one of those unleaded filler nozzle restrictor thingys welded in anyway.
i don't think i'm going to have major problems with starvation, it was really a sort of way to solve the problem of the fuel exiting the wrong side, and while i'm at it, if there was going to be a starvation problem, sort that too before its gets new fuel in and makes it difficult.
could perhaps get a small swirl pot though

I would not be to bothered about where it exited, you can pipe it to where ever you want anyway.. It's not in a "bad" place as it is..
