Differential removal sierra
josty - 30/6/04 at 12:31 PM

Hello,

Can anyone tell me how I can remove the diff. without removing the 'sub frame' and wheels? I can lower the diff. but the drive axles are screwing up my plan.

It seems that there isn't enough space to remove the axles.

Unbolt four bolts in the back of the brake hubs and pull the shafts out L&R.....thats unless anyone got a better idea

unless you got rear discs then there are 6 bolts to undoo

I also tried to pull the half shafts out of the diff. I did not succeed further than 1,5 inch. Is this possible anyway or do I have to remove the 100000 little bolts??

on drum braked cars the inner pot joints just pull out,a small circlip holds them in,on disc braked the shafts are held on with 6 bolts each side

It's a drum brake model.

You mean pull tem out at the dif side or the brake side?

Probably the enormous nut also has to be removed to get the axle out of the hub.

Josty,

Remove the wheels and the brake drums. Then rotate the drive shaft until the holes in the drive flange line up with the bolts that secure the hub suspension arm.

Undo these 4 bolts, leaving the large nut in the centre in place, and the complete driveshaft will slide out of the diff and can be withdrawn through the suspension arm.

Once both driveshafts are out you can undo the bolts that secure the diff to the subframe and lower it out of the subframe.

I don't think you will get the diff out without removing the driveshafts.

josty you have to undoo the four m13 bolts from inside the brake
you should note in the flange there is one hole you put the socket through it to get at the bolts and the whole shaft and hubs come out from the brake end
the big nut is for the wheel bearing
ps have you drained the diff oil yet
cheers dave

Oke thanks, I will try it that way.

By the way, I did not drain the oil because I couldn't find a drain plug.
