EFi or Bike Carbs??? Why's / Why Not's
BigDawgV8 - 30/1/11 at 09:24 AM

Hi All,

More advice/opinion required!

I was going down the bike carb route on my 2 litre Zetec but I was told yesterday by someone 'in the trade' that the standard efi is way better both costwise and reliability wise.

Thing is, the engine didn't come with the loom or ecu (going carbs you see). If I was going down this route I would probably buy an up-rated ecu anyway!!

I will need to buy carbs and Megasquirt or similar.

I prefer to have something I can 'fix' at the roadside rather than plug in at a garage.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! I thought I had it sussed!

All opinions welcome as usual.

Thanks again.

Martin

Bike carbs are a simple option but will still require spark control, Megajolt is simple
You can use bike injection throttle bodies but will need an ECU
You can use Megasquirt on the standard injectors with the single throttle body

Im going down the original ford ecu route, it was running perfect in the mondeo so "should" run perfect in the kit. Keep an eye on e-bay and you can pick up the loom, ecu, afm, key and aeriel real cheap. Mine will also have the ford "obd" which is the on board diagnostic plug, so you can plug in a fault code reader and see whats up.

Are you putting the car through Iva ?

I am not saying its not doable with carbs but its not going to be easy. You need a cat post aug 95 and how are you going to fine tune carbs to meet the needed emmisions with out rolling roads ?

And my opinion is that ms or mjl is in no way uprated from the ford eec-v pmsl and it can be "plugged in" in your garage for less than £50.

Standard ecu will pass iva just by wiring it up properly. No tuninig, No rolling roads just plug and play.

A lot will depend on your use of the car. If it is road use only then standard set up is ok. For more performance You may
need to spend on uprated gear. I used bike carbs and megajolt and increased power over standard spec. Depends on
your needs I suppose.

megasquirt 3 all the way, easy cost effective and all the features of an ecu 3-4 times the price.
