Hi Chaps, I Hope you can help.

I changed the Cam Belt on my 1600 Pinto.
The tensioner was knackered so I also replaced that. Anyway the engine timing was 3 notches out but ran great.

I have corrected the engine timing and I have kind of done the ignition timing.

It starts ok but if you rev the engine a let go of the throttle the thing dies.
The only way to make it idle is to release the throttle really slowly.

The idle speed is slightly erratic too.

I'd be grateful for any ideas or suggestions?

When you typed 'jind of done ignition timing', did you mean 'kind of...'?
If so that'll probably be it. I'd check it again.

yep I ment Kind of, the timing is there or there abouts.

Recheck cam timing, check ignition timing using a timing light adjust if needed then check carb setting, sound like it may be running very weak. Hope this helps, Rusty

I take it that you lined up ALL 3 of the timing marks. Cranks-shaft, cam-shaft AND the Rotor Arm with the mark on the distributor body edge/distributor cap seat(with cap removed). This mark is a pretty good indication of Number 1 firing point.
If all three are lined up, then either you have a fueling problem or you have woodruf key problems.

Yup all three line up.

As engine is so unhappy ideling its hard to check the ignition timing as the marks wander (if that makes sence.)


Might swap the disty perhaps its worn????
