7" rebuild
Moorron - 25/9/11 at 11:20 AM

Hi lads im after some advice on cost and if its possible to rebuild a Ford 7" diff.

Last year i took mine out of the car and ordered the rebuild kit after it was knocking, but after taking it apart i noticed most of the problem was in the little spider gears on the inside of the unit and not the bearings which i ordered (i think).

Also i noticed that from under the car i can wiggle the output shafts just at the bolted joint to the driveshafts up and down which isnt helping but im not sure how to rectify.

Should i just replace the bearings and washers which i now have AND/OR sort the spider gears too? What cost am i looking at for this if done by a transmission builder?

This is my main winter project so am looking for early advice now so i can order or save some £'s up. Its a Ford 3.62 LSD with bolt on shafts.

Cheers.

ps F1 going to start now so hurry.

Are you sure it was the diff Knocking, not a drive shaft CV as these when worn can knock like bu&&ery. Although I suspect that having replaced the diff you refitted the drive shafts.

Also, was it a knock from your diff when taking up drive and/or going on/off (drive to over run) the power?????.

mmm nice link, but the problem i feel on my diff is the diff unit, which has small gears that rotate on solid metal pins, there seems to be alot of play here.

I get knocking on both overrun and taking up drive but the problem which has me thinking its knackered is if i drive down a hill a dip the clutch and then drive around a corner i get lots more rattling from the rear of the car from the diff.
