What engine is this?
Trev Borg - 26/9/11 at 07:01 PM

Just picked up my midtec spyder.

The car has a renault 21 2.0 8v motor.

Anyone know what the engine code would be for it

Is it a J7R?

Douvrin engine ?

might need to get some better pictures of it

My book lists 7 variants of the J7R, 2 of which are 12v. Do you have any more info, like what throttle body and which injection?

I believe it is from Renault 21 savanna.

There may be a plate riveted to the block near the flywheel end under the exhaust manifold with the info you need??

Your choices are

J7R A7-50 - 69KW
J7R A7-51 - 90KW
J7R 7-52 -131KW (TURNIP)
J7R 7-56 - 131KW (TURNIP)
J7R 7-46
J7R 7-47

All run injection, either Renix, Siemens, Multipoint MPI, or Bendix

If you have the engine age or injection details, I could probably isolate it.

these are the ones I found.

The engine now has a DARA carb on. running with an Emerald M3D management system

Ive got one sitting in my garage. The engine plate will tell you, but it looks to me like an 8V renault J7T engine. Either 2L or 2.2.

Photos of me replacing it are here;

No, the plate is on the RHS of the block near the water pump.

Its the 2.0 8V then

so must be the J6R or J7R, as the J7T was a 2165cc.

I will have a look for a plate tomorrow.

Also I try and find out what transaxle it has. Think it will be the NG3.

Out of curiosity, are there many engines that are a straight bolt on job to replace this one?

I assume the turbo version is the same block (173 bhp)

The J7R and J7T both use the (J7) block. I replaced my J7T with an R and added a supercharger. Easy engine to work with and plenty of power can be had with the 2.0 J7R. Up to 320hp has been reported, but not on standard liners, which are the weakest point. Never heard of a burnt out piston or valve (8V turbo head), or broken rods before the liners go.

The reason the liners crack is the casting on cylinders 1 and 4 mean that there are flats that leave the outside of these cylinders weak.

Thanks for the info. I am struggling to find out anything about the engine.

I assume that it came fuel injection, as it came from a Savanna, and I don't think they ever came with the lower power carb version.

The car was build as a hill climber originally, and had a hot cam and a set of chopped webers on an injection fuel rail, running with emerald ecu. It was producing 149bhp.

It was now been detuned for road use with a Weber 28 x 32 Dara dual barrel down draught, running the same ignition for sparks.

Are there many other engines that would bolt direct to the gearbox?
