Tran-X Gearbox??
coozer - 2/10/11 at 08:35 PM

Anyone using a Tran-x type 9?

Prices look canny for a total rebuild and there's a massive choice of ratios.... had a look at the Quaffe ones but the prices are eye watering

Any experiences with any other companys? I feel the box in mine is a major hindrance as the change is horrendous and a standing start is on the hairy side... launch in first, red line, 2nd, WOW, tail wags all over as the wheels spin up due to the massive gap in the ratios..

Whats best for a first? Is 2.25 OK??

Steve

the usual is to change the first for the 3 litre Capri ratio I believe

I`m running the TranX box now after a Quaife Clubman failure.

It has a 2.482,1.61,1.225,1.1,0.82 set which delivers over 50 in first and 75 in second on a 3.92 diff.

I`d say it was pretty much bang on but all depends on your diff and wheel size etc?

2.25 first is for a very close race box probably a bit to much for the road unless you have a lot of torque and a very light car.
2.8 to 2.5 is probably about right.

are you still considering a BGH aswell ?

I managed to pick up an unused s/h BGH box (E8) with:
1st: 2.66
2nd: 1.75
3rd: 1.26
4th: 1.0
5th: 0.86

which I hope is bang on the money (for the road at least) it should give me 50mph at just over 7100rpm with a 3.92 diff and 245/45 R16's
it also had all the HD mod's inc. HD synchro in 3rd/4th - just need to get this car built and then I can tell you what its like

and despite the fact I'd got it second hand I found the guys at BGH very helpful

Diff is a 3.92, tyres are 205/60/13.

I would consider a BGH no problem, reason I asked about the trans-x was the price, it was the lowest I could find.

Cheers,
Steve

from the 2.25 ratio I assume your looking at the strait cut tranx gear kits - so I guess your not worried about the noise then ?

No no, I do want the syncromesh type, car is noisy enough!

mcerd1 - 3/10/11 at 10:41 AM

^^ its the Helical cut gears that make them quiet (rather than the syncromesh) and that limits the choice of ratio's you can get

if you beleve there website (which I'm not sure I do) the tran-x helical ones only come with a 2.48 1st (or the 1st gear only mod with a 2.98 )

Tons of ratios available, check this page:

http://www.rwdmotorsport.com/Close-Ratio-Gear-Boxes/Tran-X-5-Speed-Type-9-Synchromesh-Gearbox/prod_36.html

These are the ratios I fancy...
2.25, 1.46, 1.16, 1.0, 0.79

I think that web page is a bit misleading as it doesn't mention whether the box is straight cut or helical. If you have a look at the Tran-X website you'll see the range of ratios available for the helical gears is very limited compared to the straight cut gear sets.

I was looking at tran-x's own site too

but I had a look in the diff' section and there arn't any listed for sierra's (when I'm fairly sure they make one) - thats making me thing there might be a few missing

but I am sure that most ratios that tran-x and quaife make are for strait cut gear (I think quaife do a few in semi-helical, but they cost even more)

[edit]
try here: Tran-x online cataloge

it lists the diff's I thought were missing, but still only 2 versions of the type 9 helical gearset
