How an engine bay should look.
Neville Jones - 18/12/11 at 06:36 PM

Maybe the manufacturers of the bec's might have a good look at how neat and tidy a proper engine in a proper engine bay can look.

Just about the same number of wires and tubes as a Busa install, but this is far more professionally installed to what I've seen in the past.

Cheers,
Nev.

wylliezx9r - 18/12/11 at 06:43 PM

Why you targeting/having a go at bec install? Surely this must be relevant to all?

blakep82 - 18/12/11 at 06:50 PM

it is a fine install indeed, but yeah, not sure why BEC is picked out.
wouldn't almost all hyabusa installs be EFI? this is a carbed engine, so there is a fair bit less wiring and stuff here

does look very nice though. what is it?

daniel mason - 18/12/11 at 06:51 PM

He's obviously never seen lees (maximil666) mnr R1 turbo install and just trying to pick yet another fight on here! Most of which he loses as he can't back up his statements!
What makes a bike engine not a 'proper' engine? I've had 2x bec's and both were proper engines and proper cars. Now a cec with a decent motor

skuttle

I thought i'd done a reasonable job

ceebmoj - 18/12/11 at 07:01 PM

Looks nice but things appear to be mounted to a removable structure.

rb968 - 18/12/11 at 07:03 PM

Looks like the Red Bull Toyota(yeah right) Nascar I saw at Goodwood this year. Gimme half an hour and you can hear what it sounds like. Got a video somewhere of it being warmed up. Jumped out of my skin when they started it in the paddock behind me.

Rich

Not sure what the point of the post is though?

Superb mate, fair play really neat.

I dont really get this post, what am I supposed to do? Bin my bike engine and replace it with a neatly installed V8 just cos it looks nice.............................and to be honest I've seen a lot better.

Nice, proper engine. Even has the right number of cylinders. Ford by the looks of it?

Fuel injected too under that air cleaner I reckon

dinosaurjuice - 18/12/11 at 07:48 PM

something very satisfying about the sight of a V8 in an engine bay... anyone else think so?

shame the neatness comment makes the thread a bit sour.

indykid - 18/12/11 at 07:53 PM

I don't really understand the point of this post either. There are loads of messy cars about - they're built by amateurs who want something nailed together and running, but then there's people like ReMan that take the time to make it tidy.

The engine bay in the OP is hardly exemplary of a tidy bay. It's tidy enough but it's not ammo to go starting fights with.

FWIW, here's mine

ReMan - 18/12/11 at 08:04 PM

Is this the way?

indykid - 18/12/11 at 08:33 PM

Covers is cheating....

SWMBO's TT bay looks immaculate.....until you take the covers off.

Stott - 18/12/11 at 08:40 PM

That's not a good example of a tidy engine bay, it's functional, and neat, but the chassis hides a lot of the stuff, there's still cable ties everywhere.

The vw boys are masters of tidy engine bays, you wouldn't think the cars could run anymore:

I think the yellow Bec posted earlier is neater than the op pic

Confused but excited. - 18/12/11 at 09:06 PM

If you want to see the benchmark of a nice engine bay, have a look in Fozzie's archive . . . . . . .and weep.

mistergrumpy - 18/12/11 at 11:11 PM

+1 ^^

True dat!

I remember when we first saw her car at a show. Jasper said to me: "makes you just want to give up, doesn't it!"

I was very lucky that she and DLT helped me a lot (well, did it for me, to be fair) with the back panel of the car. Turned what would have been a mess of dented metal into a proper job!

Cheers,
James

Troll ahoy!

TAZZMAXX - 19/12/11 at 08:21 AM

I think it all depends whether you require function, form or both.

It's nice to see a tidy engine bay but I'd rather know that everything worked and had durability rather than looking pretty.

Does the OP have something against bike engines in cars as there are plenty of scruffy car engines in cars.

As I said, it really is down to what is most important to you.

whitestu - 19/12/11 at 08:29 AM

Don't know about everyone else, but I can't actually see my engine bay when I'm driving.

I've tried sitting with the bonnet off looking at the engine but it doesn't seem as much fun to me. Am I doing something wrong?

Stu

T66 - 19/12/11 at 08:41 AM

Here's my BEC engine bay.

I'm happy with it, it will get better in the course of time. Suggesting a V8 bay is proper is a bit anal, we are all different.

Like a V8 like a BEC , his bay looks nothing special.

Happy Christmas.

fesycresy - 19/12/11 at 09:16 AM

Not all BEC's are a mess.....

But I'd love a V8

onenastyviper - 19/12/11 at 10:12 AM

Nev, so what type of stock car is that picture from?

it is indeed a nascar engine, which all still run a holley 4 barrel carb! which i knew was true, but was surprised to find they STILL do! saw this headline
"NASCAR takes 'really big step' with fuel injection - Oct 19, 2011 "
lol

Yes, relevant to all, very much so. The comment is aimed at the so-called 'pros'. Many home builds put the full time builders to shame. The full timers need to pull their socks up and improve their standards. Not the first time I've made the comment on here, probably not the last.

Why pick on a bec?

I saw a couple at a well known builder not too long ago.

To say the installations were sloppy and haphazard is being polite.

Professional builders need to turn out professional looking work, not thrown together confusion.

Cheers,
Nev.

I can see the carb dashpots, manifold, rocker covers, and linkages doing their stuff through the louvres in the bonnet.

They are all polished, even SWMBO commented it was good to see them all nice and clean.

I can imagine the reply I would get if I said I was going into the garage to polish my dashpots! [not that I've got any].

My car time is limited due to work / kids so the look is functional rather than aesthetic. Maybe when I retire!

One 'benefit' of getting on a bit I guess, all kids have left and have their own homes, mortgage is a distant memory, letting go of the greasy pole at work some too.....

She likes me out of the way now and again so it all works out ok.

I was a bit surprised when she commented, her view is usually why detail whats under the bonnet.

Mr C - 19/12/11 at 08:23 PM

If the OP knows how to make a subaru turbo flat four install look good, I'm all ears.

bi22le - 19/12/11 at 08:39 PM

I know how one shouldnt look, the japs are great at untidy engine bays.

Used to always make me and my colleagues laugh when we got the latest £30K bonkers jap saloon in.

My toyota powered RAW follows these roots, blimming wires everywhere with black tape!!!!

We'll have to meet up to compare gaffa tape and cable ties one day!!

westy turbo - 26/12/11 at 11:44 AM

No jap here

NS Dev - 26/12/11 at 01:20 PM

Thought we'd made a reasonable job of this ascona 'bay:

NS Dev - 26/12/11 at 01:21 PM

Ps considering it's a road car with heater, fuel injection etc etc!!

Neville Jones - 26/12/11 at 01:58 PM

That is extremely well presented Nat. Well Done!

Very clean and USA mimimalist hotrod style, I like it.

Cheers,
Nev.

Superb!

Stott - 26/12/11 at 07:31 PM

Can someone fix the links I posted on an earlier page please!!!

They are tidy bays, like retro powers ascona only to the absolute max, every spare hole welded up etc

Cheers!!!!

Edit: just looked at the retro power one again and they have also done all the inner wings v tidy fair play, but I still think the dubbers are the masters of hiding everything away

NS Dev - 31/12/11 at 05:37 PM

There are some very clean dubs about. My only issue with some of them is the amount of filler used in the engine bay and the creation of double skinned areas that form rot traps! Curt's ascona is in use for at least 6 months of the year, and has very little filler (barely any) in the engine bay

I have seen a few mk1 golfs with horrific amounts of filler covering distortion in new sheet metal added in the engine bay!

beaver34 - 31/12/11 at 05:46 PM

vw ones are epic

scutter - 31/12/11 at 06:48 PM

Mines functional, those VW ones are sweet.

What did the builder say when you pointed out the work was sloppy/hazardous? you did say something?

Antnicuk - 2/1/12 at 07:56 PM

The escort and VW's are very nice indeed. A lot of work i feel. Its been a struggle to have a tidy engine bay with a Turbo, fuel injection, boost controller, water injection, charge coolers, oil coolers, additional injectors, water temp, oil temp, charge temp, oil pressure, boost pressure sensors plus all the sensores for the digi dash have made it very difficult for me to keep my engine bay minimalistic........
