Looking at engine choices must be same cross flow layout as a pinto and will need to be able to attach to a type 9

What's about

You'll be wanting the exhaust on the drivers side then
So sadly that rules out the XE

Nice Cossie would be my choice, Thats *if* you can find a decent one
otherwise i'd be looking at a duratech

You do need a bellhousing to join it to a type 9, as you would for an XE

Transit 2.5Di (I have 2 available), both with MT75 (5 speed) gearboxes (can both be seen, heard and driven). Free Transit van/garden shed with both.
It's a good choice, more low end torque than the Pinto, probably more economical.
