Push-in shafts - dismantling/shortening Qs
loggyboy - 20/2/12 at 10:30 PM

I need to send my shafts off to Raw to have them shortened to the right length for the striker, and I beleive they will just want the shaft, not all the joints etc, however the push in shafts seem to be fairly fixed without the typical circlips I have experience on other driveshafts when removing CVs. Is it even possible to remove them, and if so, will I be able to get new/refurbed CVs?

why not send them the complete shafts with c/v 's? they shouldnt need to remove them if they are just cutting, shortening, sleeving and re-welding. thats what i did anyway

We'll ideally i'd like to take the opportunity to replace the CV joints anyway, dont really want to put on used CVs that I know little about, one of the gaiters was badly split aswell, so who knows how long it will last.

The push in shafts have a tripod joint with 3 wheels not a CV as you know it.
They do come off with a circlip

EDIT - just reread that PDF, thats for front halfshafts?!

Thanks, but mine don't seem to be like that, there is some sort of nylon disc and it seems the outer metal of the joint is pressed around it.

Its a bit of a fiddle.

The thin steel "can" which surrounds the whole joint has to be driven off with a hammer. It is crimped on the outboard end and so needs to be opened up with hammer / suitable drift and the can is then driven off the joint along the length of the driveshaft.

There is an o-ring under the can recessed into the stub axle which you might want to inspect and you'll probably need a new can from Ford part no. 6101698 and £4.54 each for mine - may be different to yours though.

Once the can is off the end of the stub axle, the driveshaft comes free and can be further freed from the tripode after removal of a circlip which you can only see once you've driven the can off the end.

Im part way through mine - be interesting to see yours when you've got it sorted,
