Exhaust Pipe. Cut/weld or Flexi
avagolen - 24/2/12 at 09:36 PM

Good evening Collective,

Little challenge here.

I need to lift the rear of my exhaust silencer about 25mm so that it fits within the sidepod.

The question is:-

1) Do I cut the pipe as it curves at the bottom of the downpipe collector
and get it re-welded at the correct angle?

OR

2) Cut the pipe in the straight section and put a clamp style stainless flexi pipe in.
( Just enough room to move the can rearwards and still get the tail pipe on)

Thanks.

Len

i would put the flexi piece in

am sure those flexi pipes need welding anyway so i would cut and weld the original and save on buying and welding a flexi.

Thanks Tom and Daniel for the responses so far.

The pipe is an example, the company describe it as a clamp pipe,
the welding ones have very short pieces of pipe to weld to - and are cheaper.

This one is £28.79 + delivery.
If I go the welding route, I would have to get the angles correct and then
take the bits to someone who could do a gas tight stainless weld.

Are you near Uxbridge, if so bring me the pipes accurately cut I can tig up for you.

I would cut and weld BTW, or you will need more exhaust mountings with a flex coupling

Just been there and done this: Stylus link pipe thread

I had to to a further cut, bend and re-weld by a local fabricator to get it 100% lined up because I was pulling mine back in line with the bodywork as well as changing the height, having a local fabricator to do this in one sitting would have saved another £40.

I'd cut a wedge out about 3 inches from the end where it goes into the silencer. Then bend it up and weld.
Being near the end you can tidy up the inside of the weld (if you care) with a power-file.

I am not saying this is the right thing to do, but if you can MIG (stainless wire and appropriate gas) then it would be pretty easy. This is all hidden in the sidepod anyway.

Hi Gents,

Thanks for you responses.

They line up with my thinking. Cut and weld.

Hi Mark, I work at Heathrow and would love to have your assistance.

U2U done.
