Hi All,
I've recently developed a slipping clutch (zetec blacktop/type 9). I have many oil leaks on my engine so I'm taking it out to have a good
cleanup and check output/input shaft seals.
The problem is, I'm really skint at the moment and I have a really nice AP racing clutch. I'm spending what little cash I have on
replacement hosesgasketscatch tank and also some head work that I've been thinking about for a while.
If I fix all the leaks, will my clutch stop slipping with use? Can I soak it in brake cleaner? Anything else i can do or is it beyond fixing?
Cheers
Andy
how long have you been running that clutch?
As far as i was aware, once a clutch starts slipping, it's a new clutch needed!
Assuming of course there's not a problem with the clutch cable instead (i.e. not engaging properly)
If its slipping due to oil contamination, then you "may" be able to recover it. Many years ago we used to put the clutch plate in a large tin, sausepan whatever and boil it with some detergent, most times worked, but if too badly oiled you may have to do it a couple of times. I can almost bet that somebody will now come on and say "Ohhh! you cant do that", well yes you can, HTH Ray
You don't need a whole new clutch, just the drive plate. Replace it whilst the car is in bits, if you don't you will regret it, once contaminated it will always slip.
As above, you just need a driven plate - cheapish. That said I've recovered contaminated mountain bike brake pads (of various compositions) by baking them at 150c in the oven for an hour or so. Somewhat less problematic if they fail though so you may not wish to risk it.
I got a complete new clutch from eBay for about £40 is it really worth mucking about with just replace it.
hmm, a couple of interesting suggestions... I might risk scrubbing it! I'm unlikely to get an AP driven plate for cheap on the bay...
or maybe I'll eat my words...

Another thing you can try while its together, and get a few more miles before spending £££
Jam the clutch pedal down so the clutch is open, then spray the whole clutch with brake cleaner or better still Tetrachloroethylene (dry cleaning
fluid) from the side (take the starter motor out)
