Zetec to MT75 - Which starter please?
Alfow - 29/3/12 at 08:36 PM

Hi,

Although i'm not a locost builder I do intend to be one day! At the moment i'm building a mk2 escort from a bare shell.
I'll be fitting a 1.8 silvertop zetec mated to an mt75 gearbox using zetec clutch and flywheel, standard release bearing but with the modified clutch arm pivot pin from GBS.

There seems to be much more knowledge on this combination on here than on my usual Ford only forum so I wondered if somebody would be kind enough to advise me on which starter motor I need to source.
Some say 1.8cvh, some say 2.0 dohc, some say these are the same thing, but there are several different starters listed for the dohc engine. The gearbox is from a granada and it has both mechanical speedo drive as well as speed sensor (important for me so it can talk to the standard ecu i'll be using) so I believe it to be from a 1990 ish car if that makes any difference.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated as I don't want to have to buy several starters before finding the right one!

Thanks in advance,

Alan

Hi, we did the same job on a sierra, 2.0L zetec using a 2.0L zetec flywheel, a cosworth 4x4 starter does the job. Cheap copies are available on ebay for £50.

Cheers Dale.

You will need to change your flywheel for a 2.0L one, better anyway as the clutch is bigger, while your at it i'd use a 2.0L engine unless you racing in a class with cc limit

what side is the starter on i've done this 1.8 flywheel 2.0 early mondeo clutch if the starter is on the exhaust it's a cvh or dohc starter lrs 707 i think the same starter as a zetec to type 9 you can use a pinto starter with a spacer hope this helps

I'm running a 2.0 Zetec blacktop with an MT75 box, & the starter for that combination is the Lucas LRS 707.

The alternative (so they say) is the Lucas LRA 543 (or should it be LRS 543 - I've forgotten!).

They're supposed to be the same, and I hope they are, 'cos I've just bolted a 543 to my own gearbox!

If the starter in on the exhaust side, (some scorpios had it on the opposite side and a hydraulic clutch) and you just want to order a new unit which will fit, the QX Components QS1221 will do you, check my photo archive for one fitted to a 1.8 blacktop, with a 1.8 flywheel, and MT75. You can also see how much alloy needs removing from the intermediate sump.

Thanks for all the replies, plenty of opinions as usual!

Have bought this: eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

LRS759 corresponded (somewhere that I can't find now) with LRS707 and 91BB11000EA corresponded with LRS707 also so i'm hoping this will work.

I don't wish to change the flywheel for a 2.0 one as I understand the 1.8 item is much lighter and will therefore rev easier.
