Oil to water cooler
lsdweb - 18/4/12 at 09:55 PM

Hi All

I'm considering fitting an oil to water cooler to my Elise (K Series) partly to cool the oil but also to be able to bring the oil up to temperature more quickly (sprint and hillclimb car - lots of stop start!)

There are kits available (for the price of a kidney!) but I'm looking for a more Locost option!

I notice that a lot of VWs and Audis have a cooler that seems to fit between the filter housing and filter - anybody know the dimensions? I'm not sure how much space I have as the car is 40 miles away having the roll cage fitted and lots of other bits including the new front end!

Ta in advance

Wyn

from personal experience more trouble than they are worth when they go wrong. oil in water water in oil = expensive dead engine.

almost every modern turbo diesel car has one of these exchangers... might be worth looking round a scrappy?

Fair point - it's not like the K series needs any help in mixing oil and water!

I have one fitted on my 4age.

its about 1.5 times the thickness of an oil take off sandwich plate. mine come from a diesel sierra i think.

works well. i drive hard on track days and tax temp is 125.
Is that high?!?

volvo too have these - they serve more to warm the oil up more than cool it , theyre plumbed in to the waterpump bypass .

I think the vw one is about the same dimensions as the ford, certainly the filters are the same size, and I experimented with a ford one (on my old Triumph, but it is a tad too thick for clearance)
I would be after a brand new vw one methinks. No reason for them to be an issue on a well-looked after car, ie correct coolant etc.
May need a special extension bolt, unless think/mocal can supply a suitable one? But the idea IS good. Hot oil is what you want, and it should help cool the oiland moderate its temperature a bit at he opposite end. Win-win.

The Elise 111s with the vvc engine has one fitted as standard,
But I would fit the kit from Elise parts and remote thermostat!

I've just acquired one from a VX 220 so that will be going in :-)

Focus ST170's have them, nice robust little thing...

Screws on in place of a standard oil filter with an extension bolt.
