I recently saw one sat in the local garage whiuch has run low and got oil starvation on the main bearings which then needed new shells. These
apparntly were gonna cost £5k cos the come with a free engine.!!!!
Nice engine tho, i guess this is going in a rather special chassis
Going into a Quantum Extreme.
I know there are a few issues with oil starvation, mainly in No4 Cylinder. Honda changed the Banjo bolts from a two hole to a four hole head design to
correct this.

Yeah I plan on using the std injection system and ecu. I have spoken to a friend who is a Ex Honda Works Mec and he advised if I can not to bother
with throttle bodies ect on these engines. A lot of money with little or no gain.
If I run into problerms I may use a Omex ECU but hopefully not.
i gather you have to retain the entire standard loom and ignition switch etc due to the imobiliser being run through the car's ecu. I've
heard of motronic kit being used as an aftermarket ecu to overcome this. larger throttle body and better exhast should get a few more bhp, after that
it starts getting even more expensive..

I know they can be tuned quite a lot. If TB's are out what is done? Is forced induction the only option left? I know there are 'bolt
on' superchaarger kits.
I was told the engine will cope with 350BHP on standard internals. Is this the case?

Forced induction is the only way. I was told by my man of a guy who spend 6k on doing everything to the engine but forced induction and only gained
about 8bhp.
You can now get superchargers that use a turbo housing and turbine to reduce the size but are belt driven. If in the distant future I decide 240BHP is
not enought then I may go down this route.

i've heard n/a they can go to 300bhp
quite a lot of work due to the vvt cams, but cam profiles can be changed, rpm lifted a bit, porting etc etc. maybe i'm thinking of the k20 engine
which is the type-r engine, 200bhp uk spec, 220bhp jap spec.

Decided to ditch the std ecu and go with a Emerald M3DK, also looking at dry sumping. If I don't go for a dry sump the will def get a Baffled
Sump from the likes of Spoon or Mugen.
On another note, went in a Civic Type-R engined S1 Elise by Blink Motosport the other day around the Anglesey track and Fek me it was quick.
Old school friend phoned me up yesterday and offered me a spin in his S2000. Went out for half hour or so- damn is that a nice car!
He's selling it next year so if anyone was to give me 17K or so I'd be very grateful!
Anyway, had a good look under the bonnet. The engine's pretty bloody tall isn't it! Although saying that I think it's about the same as
the Pinto.

The engine is tall, a little to tall. I have decided to get a dry dump setup from Race Engine Design, which will lower the engine 102mm.
Ditching the Std ECU because its a lot of work and the car I got the engine from didn't have any keys with it at the breakers and unfortunalty
the ECU contains a immobiliser for which you need the keys to over come.. The Emerald can have two maps installed one for road use and one for track
is the plan.

That'll deffo make it shorter than a Pinto- should be easy to fit in then.
How much is the Emerald system? I'm guessing £500-£1000?
Have you considered Megasquirt? It's probably quite a lot of work but would save a lot of money.

I know we're a lcoost forum, but if you'd just spent a considerabe amount of money on an engine would you want to risk running it a bit lean
or worse case blowing it up by building your own injection system and mapping it? I certainly wouldn't!

If you'd just spent a considerable amount of money (and time!) on a car would you want to risk running it down a motorway at 70mph? I suspect
your answer will be yes.
At the end of the day you're building your own car. You're trusting your skills to strap yourself into a pile of steel and ali and propel it
down a road at high speed. You're building your own brakes for Chrissake! If you trust yourself to do all that then I don't personally think
it's a great leap to build your own injection system!
Americans manage to use Megasquirt- how hard can it be!
Anyway, it was just a suggestion. The next engine I use will most likely be injection and I'm 100% that it will be Megasquirt.

The Megasquirt doesn't really do what I and want with the complexity of the Vtec engine I don't want to take the risk. Emerald is a
complete 3d ECU and they already have a S2000 Map.
The Emerald is £550 and the Dry Sump £1000 + vat
This thing is starting to cost serious money, new I should have stuck with a trusty old Pinto.
I'll have to see it as a challenge then!
Anyway, gotta go, need to get on with this design for launch control I'm planning!

What about Honda engines rotating in the oposite direction to the norm? Or is that a myth?
the newer engines rotate the correct/normal way..

Engines older than 2000 rotate anti clockwise, newer ones rotate in what could be called the normal direction.
Older engines can be made to rotate clockwise but it does involve a lot of work. New Cams are needs as is a new ecu which can have the firing order
changed.
Some of our American cousin's have done this.
