For those who have done/know about it, what are the associated costs of doing this?
Is it easy to use the standard ECU?
It looks like you can pay anywhere from 2-500 quid for an engine, but is the best box going to be a type 9 or the omega?
I've never looked into it in depth but volvo ecus are "supposed" to be particularly friendly. I planned to use aftermarket straight
from the off.
are you looking at red block, T4, T5?
My B5234 without turbo cost £100 quid.
Benzine and Volvorsport will know better

For anybody using the Volvo T5 engine it doesn't make any sense to go for anything other than the standard ECU, it will deal with any mod's
that you may do and is highly tunable, although you will need to have it on the rolling road. The best gearbox that will bolt straight on is the one
from the Volvo 960, (M90 Box), but it wont fit in a seven due to its bulk, you can get adaptor plates from KL Racing, (www.klracing.se), to suit a
number of different rear wheel drive boxes. It's a convertion that I have been contemplating myself, so have done a bit of reseach on the

Well I have the Volvo sat on my drive, so I too am looking into fitting the engine into the 7, the biggest hurdle was the sandwich plate, so thanks
Chippy for that link, just need a B230f to type 9 box, I have several ECU's from Volvos I have scrapped in the past so maybe a bit of
experimenting may be in order.

So these plates required for saab to type 9 aren't so common?
Are the omega boxes up to the job?
From my research it would seem that the BMW Getrag box is the one to go for. Type 9 is good for "about" 160/170bhp, and as the B5234 2.3 can easily be tweeked to get better than 300 BHP, (600 if you have piles of spare cash), you will/do need a box that can take the strain. HTH Ray
why on earth would you mate a volvo engine to a type9 it will rip it to pieces. even the uprated bgh one wont take the torque the volvo engine can throw out.
I guess if you are going to be using race slicks them maybe it might not be strong enough, but for a 7 type car on road tyres, you would do well ( or badly) to break one IMO.
Well if the getrag 260 is the one to go for then that's fine by me. Looks to be cheaper and stronger than a type 9!
Any ideas on the mating of the volvo to bmw box? volvo or bmw clutch/flywheel? spacer etc?
The best clutch to use is the one from the 850R, capable of dealing with up to around 400 lbs ft. Not to sure as to what would be required to get it to operate with the Getrag, but shouldn't be an insurmountable problem, may even work with the BM arm and release bearing, I don't know. HTH Ray
From extra reading, it looks like an extra thick flywheel is needed in order to get the spline to reach. Quite a performance compromise!

Can't find any hard evidence anywhere that this 'box will fit up to the volvo engines though!
The box will definately not be a direct fit, so will require you to make up a convertion plate. The other problem could be that the spline count and diameter will almost certainly not be the same as the Volvo, (don't know for sure), so you would need to find a clutch plate that will suite both the gearbox and the Volvo flywheel/clutch pressure plate. The Getrag box on the other hand is a tried and tested convertion, and KL Racing could possably tell you what is required in the way of convertion and fitting, as they do supply the convertion plate to fit this box to the B5234. Where does the idea of an Omega box come from? Seems like an odd choice when as far as I know no one makes an adapter.
When I bought my BMW adapter from KL racing I believe they only did the plates themselves, now they do fitting kits as well which look to include
various bits I had to make/machine up myself. Perhaps worth being clear with them what is included and what else is needed.
They do the plates for "BMW lilla 6" = small 6 cyl = E30 320/325 boxes or "BMW stora 6" = bigger 6 cyl boxes
The plates also come in "rak" or "lutande", this meas 'straight' or 'leaned' (the Volvo whiteblock engines are
mounted leaning back in their original FWD installations). The straight adapter would mean the finished installation for RWD has vertical cylinders,
the leaning adapter would have the engine canted over to one side. Not sure if there is any advantage in terms of oil feed, but one option may be
better in terms of engine bay fit, column clearance etc.

The Vauxhall box will fit the Saab 9000 engine, and the amount of work to get decent BHP is about the same, allthouh I don't have the details to hand on how to do that, have got it somewhere I think, but not sure as I gave a load of stuff regarding the Saab to a friend., The Volvo leans, at about 15 degrees towards the turbo side, and the sump is made to suit that angle, but as you will need to mod that for ground clearance may not be a problem to have it upright. The main thing going for the Volvo is the beautiful sound that the exhaust makes, sounds a bit like a V8, plus the spares are very easy to get. Ideally you want to go for a pre 1998 engine as after that they were canbus and fly by wire. Super strong engine and can be tuned up to about 450 BHP on the standard internals, over the two that would be my choise. But it's your car mate so up to you. Cheers Ray
