Radiator Hoses
puma931 - 5/10/12 at 04:12 PM

Hi,

Can someone confirm if this is the correct setup for a VW polo rad and a xflow engine.

I am not sure about the yellow "hoses" that run from the small outlet on the thermostat housing to the small in/outlet on the expansion tank, and what about the small outlet near to top of the radiator. Should this be "T" together?

Also, should I bin the thermostat (trackday only car).

Cheers

Mathew

Don't bin the thermostat, water flow will cavitate and cause air locks without the thermostat
Some have used a metal blank with a hole in, others just cut the working part of the thermostat out, I prefer an early opening thermostat and a 4mm hole drilled in the mounting plate up top to let air and water through before the thermostat opens
You can modify some mini thermostats which open at 72 degrees if the Ford fit 88 & 82 ones still don't keep you cool.

Hello Puma,

Very interested in your rad layout, 'cos I shall be fitting a Polo rad to my xflow. Which hoses did you use?

I have just bought a load of hoses, connectors, bends and clamps on ebay.

I am also at this stage and also using a polo rad. Does anyone have a picture of the cooling layout? Also how do I plumb the carb into this, does anyone know if there's a silicone hose kit for this?

Cheers

I have not found a kit, but have bought a load of silicone hoses from ebay. It should all be fitted next week and then I will write a shopping list of pipes and connectors required (I might have some off cuts that you can buy too) . The carb in "T"eed into the hose that runs from the small outlet on the water pump to the bottom of the expansion tank (green line on the pic).

More to follwo next week.

Cheers

Mathew
