Whilst I've got my engine apart I'm going to measure the bearing clearances. According to the manual, rod bearing clearances should be 0.0012 - 0.002 (limit 0.002) and main bearing 0.0007 to 0.0014 (limit 0.002).

You can get red plastigauge (PL-A) which is for 0.001 to 0.007, or PL-X which is for 0.0007 to 0.0017.

Do I get the red and work on the assumption that provided it squashes to less than 0.002 it's fine (and assume it won't be tighter than 0.0007)? Or do I get the other stuff, which will be more accurate, but I won't be able to tell if rod bearing is within limits if it's over 0.0017?

No one used it that can advise?

I have used plastigauge to measure bearing clearances on turbo generator bearings, but this is checking clearances of .008"-.012"

For what you are doing I would use the .001-.007 and be happy if it is under .002". Plastigauge is not the easiest thing to measure when it is at its thinnest as it easily tears, I assume you will be measuring it with a micrometer that reads to .0001"?

Years ago we use to use thin lead 'wire' which was much better than the plastigauge as it didnt tear, but I dont believe you can buy it now.
