Call that a piston?
rodgling - 11/11/12 at 11:40 AM

This is a piston:

From an 148 litre straight 8 diesel making 3600 bhp at 1000 rpm, apparently.

Probably not very locost or light weight though, I will admit.

omega0684 - 11/11/12 at 12:12 PM

what is it out of?

rodgling - 11/11/12 at 12:18 PM

Out of this 19 ton marine engine monster:

http://marine.cat.com/cda/files/1377786/7/Cat%203608%20Propulsion%20Spec%20Sheets.pdf

Apparently this one had fuel injector problems and burned the crown of the piston (hence the blueing round the top). The holes in the top of the piston are for attaching bolts so you can lower it into the engine with a crane!

"Can you hear pinking?"
"Nah, sounds OK to me........"BANG!!

Taken from one of our little engines. Piston is about 300mm across.

dave r - 11/11/12 at 01:13 PM

about the size of the ones i used to work with
somewhere i have a cam roller here that came from one,

also a 12mm bolt that fell in through the exhaust, and got pounded by the piston

will look for them later

Yeah and I bet we have all had the thought

'I wonder if it would fit...'

even if only briefly

wilkingj - 11/11/12 at 02:24 PM

It rather Dwarves the piston out of my Frog 1.5cc model airplane engine!!!

iank - 11/11/12 at 02:31 PM

All tiny compared to these

Bonus points for spotting the locostbuilder...

i done my apprenticeship on large Mirrlees blackstone static 1.5mw generators with pistons like that, two straight 8's bolted together, quad turbo'ed through a common gearbox, still have a dot punch made out of a inlet valve stem

owelly - 11/11/12 at 07:34 PM

My 'big' engines are Mirrlees KVSS16. Lovely things.

SteveWalker - 11/11/12 at 07:50 PM

Many years ago I was involved in testing a couple of 250 litre, V12, turbo-charged gas engines. They were beasts - 4500 bhp at 300 rpm. During build, it was easier for the electricians wiring the instruments around the top of the engines to stand *IN* the cylinders! Design life was over 20 years, running 24/7.

owelly - 11/11/12 at 08:34 PM

My Mirrlees were comissioned in 1959 and have been running (in rotation) ever since!

valve
valve

valves i have

v 16 4 valve per head, 750 rpm twin turbo 5.5 MW alternator on the end mostly at 11kv
