As per the subject line, I had one on my spark plugs helicoiled (in the daily drive) and I've just gone to replace the p[lugs and out come the
helicoil. So I think, simples I'll just take the helicoil off and put it on the new plug, however not that simple it won't come off and
I've rather fecked the threads on the helicoil. So now I'm stuck and I can't find anyone local to put a ne plug in or even supply me
with a coil.
So anyone know a mobile mechanic, who will do helicoiling and come to letchworth Herts?
Anyone?
What size Helicoil is it? They are available online.
It's a 14 x 1.25 internal, looks to be about 16mm outside dia' and 15mm long. I can get one online but was hoping to get it fixed today so I can go to work tomorrow, I've found a local garage that might be able to get me one today but they're a bit sketchy, esp as when they thought I'd just knackered the normal thread and needed a thread insert fitting that it's would require taking the head off!
These are what I'm after, just can't find anyone local who has them!

Hurrah, found one. Spoke to a chap at Laybury Garage Equipment (no relation etc) in Hitchin, who didn't have one but phoned someone he'd sold a kit to and got one from the kit on the basis that I paid for the replacement. And the cost for this amazing service £5! So I gave him a tenner and said have a drink on me! Glad that in this corporate / commercial world there are still a few decent, helpful, suppliers!!!

Its easy to do. Just make sure you retrieve the tang that breaks off.
Cl engine rebuilders in henlow opposite teraf base try them
Cheers for the info,
So I got a new thread sleeve, but managed to feck up the installation, it was tight but a little proud, but ran fine all last week. Until today when I
foolishly thought that I'd just tighten it up, now it's not tight! The engine will start but I don't think it'll survive a
'normal' drive so I'm going to give these guys ago: http://www.cylinderheadengineering-bedford.co.uk
Will let you know how I get on, the real buggeration factor is I'm still in the middle of my winter mod's and the kit isn't drivable
So you installed it, ran it for a week, and then tried to tighten it up? Youre supposed to break off the tang that the tool grips on to, so unless
youve left that on (which would obstruct the plug) i dont see how you can try and tighten it again?
Just yank the old one out with pliers and screw another one in properly.
It's not a helicoil, it's actually a tread insert (news to me too) same principle but thicker
Did you thread lock it in? I found that they can sometimes extract with the bolt / plug so now i always lock them in. For lower temp applications, i would grease the thread as well, with either lithium grease or HT bearing grease.
I can also recommend Power Units in Hatfield. If you google them their website appears to be down, but they are a bunch of guys in a large shed full
of engine components; I don't think they are aware of the internet
They do have a phone though so give them a ring if you need to.

Dave
