hi all,
Driving to work today a suddenly heard a very bad noise from engine.
The car is a 1400 zetec focus and it turns out that a bigend bearing has failed. Ive been phoning round trying to find another 1400 but it seems they
are hard to come by!.
Does any body know if a 1600 or 2lt would drop straight in or are they mounts/gearboxs different!!!
On a slightly better note, got my sva date back today, 21st oct at Norwich
Cheers
craig
1.4 is a zetec se IIRC
See this from the buron website.
Zetec 'E' 16v
Ford has given the 'Zetec' name to three different types of 16v engines:
Zetec E - The original Zetec engine was fitted to Escort, Orion, Mondeo, Cougar and 1.8/2.0 Focus models. It has been produced in 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0
litre capacities. All engines produced up to April 98 use hydraulic followers, those built from May 98 were redesigned using mechanical followers.
These later engines are fitted in the Focus, Cougar and late Mondeo models.
Zetec S - This is the baby Zetec as fitted to the late Fiesta, Puma and 1.4/1.6 Focus models. It has been produced in 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7 litre
capacities. These engines bare no mechanical resemblance to the Zetec E engines.
Zetec Duratec HE - This is a brand new engine that has just been released and is to be fitted to the 2001 Mondeo model. We expect to see this engine
in other models during this year. It is totally redesigned from the Zetec E engine it will inevitably replace. The most noticeable difference is the
fact that this new engine is chain driven, not belt driven like the earlier engines.
Bad luck
have you tried fords, ive had a suprise when looking for engines and found them to be reasonably priced
thanks for reply,
so do you recon i could replace it with a 1.6 se.
Zetec-S is *very* hard to come by. You're probably better fitting a 2.0 Zetec E - just find a suitably crashed Focus and swap all the bits
over?
Chris
1.6 zetec SE will fit and is easier to find than the 1.4. You might find that parts from ford are cheaper than a new engine-an exchange 1.6 short motor is £390 plus VAT. The 2 litre Zetec E will be a nightmare to fit as the exhaust and inlet are on the opposite sides to the S motor
Craig,
You may want to try Environ. They are in Chelmsford. They sell second hand Ford engines.

surely, if you change the engine, there will be other 'knock on' stuff to change as well, like ecu..... is the exhaust the same, etc, etc

I'd want to know why it failed first.
Why can't you have the crank reground and fit new shells?
cant you phone ivor searles at soham and price up either new or recon parts? by the way good luck at norwich.

worth a call ?
Hi Guys,
just read this post, and have some info on the "Sigma" engine seeing as i work for Fords engine remanufacturer!!!
The Mains Bearing shells are graded to give the required running clearance, and some levels of block require "increase crush height shells"
depending upon the main bearing bore diameter. This is due to the main bearing bore suffering from ovality.
The root cause may be down to the oil pump/ladderframe... it was an OE issue, i can check with our warranty engineer tomorrow, see if theres anything
else renown with this engine.

There is a company called Scratch & Dent, I know is a really corny name, but they buy all the salvage from Avis rent a car. I have personally written off 4 1.4 Focus CL's this year, so they should have a few kicking around.
You really must be more careful Mark .
