On a blacktop I can't see any way of getting this out other than hitting it very hard. Sump is off and no retaining screws. Am I missing something before I get angry with it??

Just pull it bloody hard its only held in with an o ring.

If pulling fails try a close fitting drift from inside the block knocking it outwards, if you have access to a lathe it may be worth making up a stepped drift
