Nylon joints in a coolant system?
ChrisLeary - 28/6/13 at 08:17 PM

Evening all,

I'm about to start plumbing my cooling system, my question is, in the 8mm bleed line from the thermostat, can I use nylon joints? I mean the barbed ones you can get from ebay.

The engine is a 2l silvertop zetec if it makes any difference.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

The black plastic tees and joiners sold for fish ponds work OK -- you will find them on ebay the brass ones also on ebay are better though and cheap enough.

Ok, thanks for the info. I've bought the white barbed ones from autosiliconehose.com I assumed they'd be ok because they are advertised for use with water, but I guess heat and pressure might be a problem?

Thanks,
Chris

I have never tried them I just know the black ones work.

Not much heat (<120degC) or pressure (<1atm above ambient) in the coolant system.

Not that you'd think it when you remove a rad cap on a hot engine!

They will be fine, these Davis Craig Electric Water Pumps are all nylon internals and are a lot thinner than a hose joiner.

Thats good information to know, thanks matt. I think I'll try them and see how I go. I can always replace them with brass ones if I need to.

Thanks to you both.

Chris

I'm using some of these, no problems so far.
