Hello all,
So, i have a dilemma, everyone knows i have a bit of a thing for pinto engines and i think i may have got myself into a bit of trouble. this evening i
recieved a call from a friend that informs me that he has heard of a bit of a bargain.
At present i have a 200bhp (@ the flywheel), 2.1 litre pinto sat on the garage floor (it was in the car but i had to change the core plugs) and was
planning on swopping to a 2.0 litre durabang in the winter. i have a durabang sat on the engine stand at the minute waiting for its overhaul. Then a
mate calls and says hes knows of a 2.7 litre pinto thats for sale at a rediculous price that is virtually impossible to turn down, and when i mean
impossible, i am on the verge of going to the bank tomorrow and getting the money sorted, but after cooling down from my hot sweat, i thought i would
see what the general consensus was. the engine is an absolute corker by the sounds of things so ive asked said friend to find out some more
information about it.
i am really thinking about packing up the duratec and sticking it up for sale, my 200bhp pinto to!
Arhhh what to do, what to do!
Step away from the pinto.
I voted pinto, but I have no idea why... the duratec has to have so much more potential, but 2.7 litre pinto? This has to be seen.... what sort of power does it make?
I had to say Durabang, purely because no one needs a mega-expensive Pinto in their life! Spend the money on a Duratec instead, and try going around corners!
We need to know more about the 2.7 pinto before voting!
Is it this one????

I've recently installed a F20C Honda S2000 engine for about £2500, 240 bhp, high revving perfectly suited to a lightweight car, I cant think of a
more suited engine (apart from its quite tall).
I just love the fact that tuning a modern engine is relatively straight forward; no emulsion tubes, main jets, idle jets etc just a lap top and
somebody who knows what they are doing.
Jusy my opinion of course
I guess sensible would be duratec
But who wants to be sensible, I mean come on sensible doesn't involve building cars, or tinkering with engines, or considering pinto's, so
why start taking the sensible route now
Move on.
I can see the attraction, not dissimilar to a turbo on my Blade so i dont have to change the engine mounts, when really I shoulld just be ditching it
for a nice modern engine.

If its like the one in the link, derived from a yank pinto nothing is interchangeable with a UK pinto so a parts nightmare.
Go modern

If any of the parts go bang then replacements would have to come from esslinger in America
But from what I know about it it would create one big but expensive smile!
Much as I can see the appeal of something out of the ordinary, It's a no from me. 200bhp and 200lbft
is available in other forms for much less money and much easier spares supply.
All i can say is weight against power, durabang it is then.

I really dont see the point in running old technology at new tech prices. Parts Availability, weight, performance, local knowledge will all be better with newer. Its like choosing to run a marathon in roman sandles - tis possible but why the hell?
For that money I'd go Duratec.

For that sort of money I'd go for a `built' KL V6........or maybe bung a turbo on a stock KL and go out and play around with 4 to 500 BHP
I payed £100 for mine, and had it in for about £900 , thats for everything from the axle forward.......
The only reason for having a big-dollar Pinto is because the racing class you are in demands a Pinto - you dont have that restriction .
I'm a firm believer of kiss (keep it simple, stupid) so would normally say pinto for pinto. In this instance though I think durabang is the simple option.
For that kind of money I would defo go duratec. Brand new set of jenveys and an omex. 180-200 bhp and if something breaks there are plenty of
replacements available easily.
But if you really like pintos and is what your heart wants then go for it!
No point spending good money on an old Pintosaurus IMO, might be something special but modern 16v engines are built to much better tolerances so I
would rather plough my money into using them as a base to start off with.
You take the head off a Duratec with 100,000 on it and the pistons, rings and bores are like new. You do the same with a Pinto on half this mileage
and you can wiggle the pistons around in the bores easily by hand.

For that money you could build and install a 240bhp duratec easily

I'd go with Claire on the KL V6 option. For roughly £1000, maybe a touch more, I'll be looking at a fully rebuilt engine on ITBs with a full SS exhaust running a sequential MS3X that should have about 210-220bhp and an 8000 RPM red line. However, that's running standard cams and compression both of which are tame. If I can find a way of upping the compression without forking out for forged pistons or wrecking the timing there's much more to be had. Shame the only place that seems to re-grind the cams is in Canada.......
