Starter Solenoid..?

Hi All,
I am new to this site, and hope some of you budding car builds could help?! I have aqquired a part built stuart taylor (i think!) with almost all parts. I have some engine related questions as i know nothing about old engines - esp xflow which is in mine.

1. My starter is fitted buy has no solenoid - is this normal/is it hidden?
2. which way does the fuel pump pump and do you need a lift pump at tank end?
3. coming out of the water pump is a threaded hole - is this for a fan switch, if so any suggestions on purchasing one.
4. there are 3 pipes coming out of the manifold. 1 i guess is for brake servo (the larger one on its own), and then there is 2 the same coming out at an angle which are for...?
5. i have no idea how to set up ignition/coil/dizzy etc...help?
6. how do i know what size engine it is?

On another note, where can one find the requirements for SVA - i built a 7 about 10years ago so i am sure things have changed a bit since!

Is there anything else i should watch out for...?

Alternatively I might be tempted to sell the lot (so i can start restoring a landy 110) should anyone be interested (99%complete and almost finished) £1000's of new parts.

Welcome to the forum

some answers:

1, could be a remote solenoid like on a classic mini etc.
2, should be ok with just the one pump
3, need a pic really but I don't think this is normal
4, brake servo and water pipes for the coolant
5, get a haynes manual
6, someone who knows about this will be along soon!

SVA has become IVA

Lots of crossflows use an inertia type starter motor, which requires a remote solenoid. Like this:

You shouldn't need a lift pump at the tank end if the fuel outlet is near the bottom of the tank. Don't know which way around the connections are from memory, but check to see if there are any arrows cast into the pump.

This hole takes a hollow threaded "spigot" which the heater hose connects to on the original installation. Fan switch will either go in radiator, or in the thermostat housing if you use one from a Fiesta.

They are very probably the original crankcase breather pipes.

Do you have the original points or is it electronic?

This is usually cast into the side of the block. Have a look at Burtons web site for a description of casting marks.

Do away with the Mechanical one and fit a electrical facit type after the tank

No was for heater hose plug up unless you are having a heater my fan switch is on the radiator or you could fit a fiesta type one at the top where the thermostat hopusing is

one is for cooling water one is for vac for brake servo not sure about 3rd i'll check

Get a manual

6. how do i know what size engine it is?
on side of block does the last 2 letters sat AA 1300 or may be 1100 AB is 1600
