Help - Type 2 box can't select 1st/3rd/Reverse
puma931 - 15/8/13 at 02:15 PM

I can't select 1st, 3rd & Reverse when not running or running.
2nd is OK and 4th is a bit difficult but it goes in. I have checked the gear lever and extension and it all seems to be OK.
I removed the top cover (see pics) and there does not appear to be anything broken, but the selecting rod won't move back to engage 1st or 3rd.

Before this problem, 1st and 3rd were a bit tricky, but once 1st was selected it was fine, I could get all gears. There was no crunching or anything.

Any ideas?

2nd pic - neutral

It's probably broke

Is this using the type 9 lever you bought the other day? Could it be that they arent compatible?

It has a type 9 extension which all seems OK. With the gear lever removed I can't pull the rod back to select 1st/3rd...

Sorry - I'm just that way out this PM ...

Is reverse next to 1st and 3rd?

if so it sounds like the lever isn't giving enough throw to get the forward gears to engage - so loose linkage?

Failing that wear on the selector forks?

After selecting 2nd and 4th quite a few times it now goes into 1st, 3rd and reverse... there is some wear on the bronze(?) selectors forks the flat bits...

I have successfully built these up using brazing in the past although new forks will be a better bet if this is the issue - if you can get them.

Could it be the detent plunger stopping the selecting rod moving back, as when I could not get 1st, 3rd and reverse there was something stopping the rod moving back to selct the gears.

Just bought 1300GT box for £5.00 on ebay :-) so will be fitting this as I can't fix the selection problem. Hopefully the ebay bargain will work.
