V-belts, how tight are they supposed to be?

Just put my vbelts on my Rover V8 for the first time. Quite happy as I go the correct lengths first time.

How tight are they supposed to be? I pulled on the tensioners with all my strength and did them up and they seem okay. Is it just a case of looking for any slippage when I finally get it running? It is for the water pump and alternator.

ive always worked to 1cm of deflection on the longest run between pullets.
Not very scientific, but never had any issues.

The belt must not be too tight --- you need a little deflection to avoid over loading the bearings.

Rover V8s with single Vee alternator belts are infamous for alternator belt slippage immediately after a cold start you have to live with it.

I was taught that 1/2" per foot run was right for any V belt......

I've also noticed belts stretch slightly when first run, I've often found myself getting another turn or two out of the adjuster after the first 200 miles or so.
