I took advice from 'rusty nuts' and fitted a competition sump gasket with a smear of non-setting goo. No leaks since (he says, touching wood frantically).

Have been on the road a few times, now I'm "street-legal", and fully registered. Now even more concious of the stiff back end. Car off
road, to remove rear coil-overs, removed the springs in prep for new ones.
Now, when my car was sitting in the lock-up, there were no oil leaks, not even from my ancient Xflow 1600. The sump has been bashed, ever so slightly,
in getting the car to and from the VOSA test station (twice!). Yet still no leaks - great!
After a couple of 10-mile road trips, now the sump leaks!! This is not good. Moreover, as I had suspected, from my speedo failure, the 90deg adaptor
has popped out from the gearbox drive, leading to another potential leak point! What is worse, the gearbox will have to be extracted, in order to
endure that this adaptor is securely replaced.
SWMBO has adopted the "now you've finished your car....." approach, so dodging off to the lock-up isn't quite so easy. Looks like
it'll be an "engine out" job, just to deal with the gearbox prob, unless it can be fixed from underneath. Might search for somewhere
with a hoist.
TRy undoing the gearbox mount and using a trolley jack to angle it back, might give you a few extra cms to work with.
Sump leak is likely to have been enduced by a few heat cycles that caused it to shrick and contract. Add some flexible gasket sealent to the
cork/rubber if thats what you have at the moment.
I cut a nice big hole in the tunnel over the gearbox outlet, and pop-riveted a neat aluminium panel over it. In my case, I had made an electronic
sender for my speedo that went through a phase of coming unglued at random times, so it had to come out and get fixed several times - and it
wasn't as easy to fit as a cable.

There is an easy way to cure the swambo issue. She moaned that we didn't spend enough time together when I was building the car. When it was finished I made an extra effort to spend time together. We spoke over hollyoaks EastEnders corri and lots of books and other TV shows. She eventually gave in and said can't I build another car, jokingly, so I did :-)
