Automatic Zetec

Hi Guys,

Looking into options for engine upgrades, i'm planning on going the Zetec route for my first go.
I'm looking to buy a complete car (mondeo/focus), but was just wondering if it makes any real difference if i buy a manual or auto car? I will be mating to a 5 speed type 9.

Cheers,
Andy

AFAIK engines are identical, and assuming you will be changing flywheel/clutch/starter arrangement to suit type9, you should be free to choose any.

If the zetec is from an automatic car then the housing for the crank position sensor needs changing the manual engined type. But the sensor itself is the same for either engine.

Obviously you will need a flywheel, and clutch but it does give you the chance to buy a proper steel flywheel instead of having your standard boat anchor modified into a deadly weapon.

Also you will need a crank sensor carrier from a manual, if you leave the auto one in it will be too short with the manual flywheel to get a signal and the car will be a no go. It cannot be changed once the engine and box are mated and in the car.

What about the spigot bearing ?
as I believe that some cars with auto box's don't even have a hole in the crank for a spigot bearing, as its not needed

Had 2 Silvertops, one was an Auto and one a Manual. Both had the same crank and both required spigot bearings to be fitted. cannot imagine Ford fitting a different crank, simply complicates manufacturing.

That's fine, just making sure my m8 doesn't get lumbered with some pig iron

FWI on automatic classic mini's, the engine is different, and does not have a spigot bearing,or even a hole to put one in or a dip stick hole on the engine
hence my question

Automatic silvertop Mondeos had the EDIS 4 fitted as used in the Megasquirst set up

I see from your other post you are intending on using the stock ECU? It that case check to make sure the electronics are the same between the two transmissions.
