i have been looking for a tall ratio first type9 box or gear kit and a friend of a friend has a box with a quaife close ratio clubman gear kit in it
and has little use.
all the ratios are all better for my car as 1st,2nd,3rd are higher and 5th lower than my std box. i know S/C boxes are quiet noisey but im not sure
how loud this exact box would be in a light 7rep with no screen and a loud exhaust.
im also thinkig it would be a better option as im already running 165bhp
most of the time i drive with a motorcycle helmet or have earplugs in as it gets a bit windy so im thinking i shoud be ok?
anyone have any experince of a type9 with s/c gears
Have been running 320HP on a type 9 for 4 years, have done numerous track days and launches at santapod.
I can only put it down to the tyres breaking traction rather than the box.
Loud. I will not use one for the road. I am removing mine over winter for something else. Did a big drive this summer and I had to use my headphones
we've all heard how noisy they are as almost all cars have straight cut reverse, just think of that whining away for hours...what a total pita
my tech teacher at school ran a classic mini rally car to school it too had straight cut gears and was horrendously loud. I think most people will
think your car is knackered

Heres a video that I'm always reminded off when I hear about straight cut gears

Why do you think they are always on ebay saying only done so many miles.

I've got a straight cut quaife. It's loud but not awful. I often drive wearing in-ear ear defenders and it's not obtrusive then. Some
of the noise gets through but it's more a signal of what the car is doing.
When the box is cold it takes a little effort to make the changes but once warm it's like a knife though hot butter.
Those that know what they're hearing as you drive past will nod knowingly.
It seems to depend more on which gearbox, mini's are particularly noisey with a sc box. The vid above is also extremely noisey..
I have a tranx straight cut kit in my type 9, and i don't mind the noise it makes. Used on the road, a bit of track day, rwyb (with nitrous) etc
and it's been in for many years now;-

I can testify to how loud minis are with a straight cut box and drop gears. You could hear my car two miles away round here! I needed ear plugs to drive to work. It was only 5 miles.
Back in the late 80's when I first built my original Caterham the only way to get close ratio gears was to locate a genuine Ford helical Rocket
box from an X Pack RS2000 Escort homologation special (only ever seen 2 in 35 years) or use a Quaiffe or Tran-X strait cut box.
My first Quaiffe box an Escort Sport 4 speed one, slightly noisy in the first 3 gears but quiet as a mouse in top, unfortunately they were a bit
fragile (rated at 150 bhp) and when I moved to slicks was advised to swap boxes. My next box was a 4 speed Quaiffe pro, very noisy in the first 3
gears and still moaned like an unpaid prostitute in top, once I stopped using the car on the track its days were numbered.
Since 1999 I have been using a BGH helical cut close ratio box. The first 2 broke but BGH replaced them under warranty, the third was has been fine.
The ratios are spot on and its quiet. If I was spending now I would get a SP Components Tracsport Type 9 rocket ratio helical gearbox
http://www.spcomponents.co.uk/gpage.html. The ratios actually look better and the spec of the box is much higher than the similarly priced top line
BGH box, the SPC box uses all new internals whereas BGH use old syncros and some old gears.
i run a semi helical gearset from spc in my type 9, strength of straight cut with alot less noise.
also ratios are great, long 1st perfect for our light cars
