Mx5 Gearbox - What is this for?

As per title really, what is this sensor for? It's currently fowling the side panel and I'm hoping it has no use, so I can blank it!

It's the reverse light switch, so if you do remove it you need some other way of lighting the reverse lights (assuming you're aiming for a road going car).

what he said.

you may want to cut a hole in the side panel then fit a cover with some spacer - will give you access to the switch and wiring in case you need to replace in the future rather than dismantling the tunnel. etc

Just thinking out loud, is a reverse light required these days for IVA?

Put nice rounded dent in the panel where the switch fouls. I cut the end of a small disposable Co2 bottle and hammered the panel into it to leave a dent.

Yes I believe it is.

Yes, what he said.. ^^^^^^^

I was not going to put one on my car as the MOT does not require it (as far as I know).
I assumed that the IVA also did not require one - Wrong.
It definitely says one is required in the book of worms.

I have one fitted that looks rubbish for now.

Ah, there may be an option, this line from the IVA manual;

5. They must operate by selection of reverse gear, or be fitted with a telltale warning device.

That means that you could have it simply working off a dashboard switch, similar to the fog lamp, as long as it has a telltale?

Thanks all. The car is already registered so iva not an issue.

I'll have a look at adding a bulge, I like the co2 canister idea! Thanks for the quick replies, much appreciated.
