Fitting a fuel pump to the tank
pekwah1 - 28/12/13 at 10:26 PM

Hi Guys,

So i've got a bike pump that i want to fit to my tank.
This is going to require cutting a bit hole in the bottom of the tank and then drilling the smaller holes for the bolts.

Only thing is that the tank isn't exactly thick metal, maybe 1-2mm, this doesn't seem thick enough to be tapping holes for the pump to bolt to.

Any suggestions?

Only idea at the moment is get a much thicker plate welded onto the bottom of the tank and then tapping this?

Cheers,
Andy

I tapped my tank (probably 1 or 2mm aluminium) - it's not very satisfactory but it did do the job, so it might be OK (you'll need a bit of thread lock to make sure it seals). But yeah, welding something on would be better.

or make up a ring holding captive nuts to go inside the tank?

i thought of that but how would i get the ring inside the tank without cutting an even bigger hole?

A tube with a wide flange, sort of top hat shaped. Sealant and closed end rivets or self tappers.

Nige, i have no idea what you're on about!!!!

Ah, I've re-read your first post, you're not after an outlet pipe as I first thought so ignore my comment

As for a tapped ring, make it in two halves ??

What about using rivnuts? Memfast do a great tool and various size rivnuts...

I've just made one but it's for an oval hole - presume yours is perfectly circular then? if so, make it in two halves as suggested.

problem with rivnuts is they dont sit flush so i won't get a seal on the pump

They do some very low profile heads so if there is a gasket I would think they would be ok... But point taken....

Horse shoe shape then you can feed in, couple of blobs of sealant to hold in place while you bolt in the pump, job done.

cheers guys, think i'll go with the horseshoe idea

What kind of pump is it? I just strapped my bike pump to a chassis rail and gravity fed it from the tank..

I had Martin Keenan, at MK engineering put a injected Fireblade pump into my tank a few years ago, worked very well, it even had a small sump built into it
