Gearbox gate gone with new engine
pekwah1 - 2/2/14 at 06:16 PM

Hi guys,

I've recently taken out my crossflow and replaced it with a blacktop zetec.
It's bolted to my 5 speed type 9, but after I stuck the zetec in, I can't really select a gear and it feels like the whole gate has moved.

I've got to take the engine back out, so I'll see if the gate seems to work then, but any ideas what could cause this or things I could look at?

Cheers
Andy

Have you removed and replaced the gear lever at all during your engine change ??

Check the little plastic saddle is in place at the bottom of the gear lever. ,also check the selector shaft roll pin hasn't come out

Nope, entire gearbox and bell housing stayed in the car!

Gearbox position moved so its now fouling on the tunnel?

Andy

I can not see how the gate has moved? that bit does not make any sense

Can you select any gear?
does the gear lever move?
is the clutch working ?

You did check the spigot bearing clearance, before you bolted the engine in ??

pekwah1 - 2/2/14 at 07:20 PM

Nope I didn't check tbh... Also no I haven't sorted the proper clutch setup yet.
In any case it should make any difference when the engine isn't running...

Have you taken the lid off the gearbox and then tried changing gear. Causes problems on a type 9 as many have discovered.

Did you fit a spigot bearing into the end of the Zetec crank?

ChrisL - 4/2/14 at 01:35 PM

my vote is for the clutch, when my clutch cable gets too hot (and expands meaning I get less clutch travel) I have trouble electing gears

pekwah1 - 4/2/14 at 06:49 PM

Ok so I've had another look and it turns out that my engine wasn't sitting completely straight in the car.
As a result, the selector was getting jammed on the cabling running down the tunnel.

Lifted the engine up a bit and problem solved!

Thanks for the advice and help, glad it was a stupid straight forward fix!

agh shows what I know!! glad you got it sorted

I still like the idea of "electing" a gear change.
What happens if you and the passenger don't vote for the same gear.
Neutral I guess.

in my ford focus my gearbox often decides to "elect" the action to make a very embarrassing noise and alert passes by that I was too quick with my clutch!!

I verbally respond with "fine, I didnt want that gear anyway!"

What do I win for being closest to the problem

They are all in there somewhere, you just have to find them

They even give you a stick to give them a good stirr.....

lol, so with an election gearbox, do you vote for third, but really get fifth or given the current government reverse!

pekwah1 - 5/2/14 at 10:31 AM

Pete, for being the closest guess, you win 5 litres of used engine oil
