I have a 1.4k series turbo kicking out around 300bhp and 250 torque, I was planning on using the type 9 with a custom bellhousing but after reading
a few reviews on it they don't like to be put under the strain ill be putting it under...
So my question is, what other lightweight gearbox can handle the power

you will find afew people using uprated type 9 on here with no issues
there is a guy runs a tock box with a 300bhp zetec turbo with more torque than you and his is fine
i run 340bhp and 266lbft through a semi helical type 9 gearset from spc in my car
Ah great, how reliable are they with those kinds of figures?
Its only a bearing problem helical gears put stress on the bearings and they fail straight cut gears put way less pain on the bearings so type will be fine for a while but would fail eventually without a bit of beefing up.

The Caterham 6 speed box also I think can cater for that power as used in there r500 spec with 260 bhp but prob only 200ft 1lb torque,
Also a good ratio for the k series engine,
It is the same dimensions as a type 9 box
Yeah I have seen them, pricey compared to the type 9 mind, my original plans were to use a pg1 bellhousing + adapter plate welded on then custom
clutch or shaft adapted to fit the rover clutch
but we're see what happens
I'd be very surprised if a stock Type 9 would cope with 250 ft lb especially in a turbo application. You'll likely destroy third gear first though...
That's what I'm weary of, but hey if it'll last 5-10k miles I'd be happy
I used to have the engine in a rover metro and that was crazy for a fwd and 850kg lol
So 600kg and rwd should definitely be a whole new ball game!

I guess the most obvious answer to your question is the T5.
I've got a 3.9 v8 bolted onto the front of my standard type 9 gearbox.....and so far no problems but I have got it in the back of my mind that it
may go on me one day.
I spoke to the guys at first motion gearbox as they seem to do a fair bit with type 9's and they were very helpful even though they knew they
wasn't getting a sale out of me. They told me that 3rd gear is the one that normally goes first......they also said that the gearbox will take
more bhp from a n/a engine than it would from a turbo engine because of the n/a engine's power delivery is easier on the gearbox than the turbo
engine's 'kick up the ar5e' once the turbo kicks in.
They did finish by saying that because the type 9's came out of a 1200kg car and it's now in a light weight car that I would problem break
traction at the rear wheels before breaking the gearbox as long as I wasn't silly with it??....well thats the hope I'm clinging to
That's the problem, my engines throttle is basically an on/off switch...nothing then everything within 1000 revs, but as you say it was designed for a heavy car so put it into a car half the weight can only be good

Yup I agree with you there, personally I love that feeling of out of control madness lol (when it don't end up in the gravel)
Obviously once you do drive and experience it a few times though you'll soon tame it's ways
I broke my BGH E6 Type 9 with 260 ft lb and had to get it upgraded to an E8
Standard 3rd gears are case hardened all the way through and tend to shatter rather than deform (as has happened here). So it will be third that you
destroy first!
Might not be an easy fit but I understand an MX5 6 speed ( NOT 5 speed ) is pretty tough. Quite a few turbo MX5s running 300 bhp and related torque without apparent major problems. A Mazda 6 speed seems to sell for about £250. Hope this helps.

I would look at ratios if you looking at 6 speed
Your have torque so it will pull in the gears no need to keep it on the boil so much
Ir run an uprated type 9 and would go that route if you cannot fit a t5 cossie box in there, also if you don't already have it some nice boost
control as a big spike is not fun in a light car
I run 340bhp and 266lbft on medium r888 205 60 13 at the back and on full power it sticks and grips in second onwards no issues with weel spin at all,
I also have a plate diff in the back which is fantastic
So if I can fit it in the t5 would be better overall then the type 9 and mx5 in strength and durability?
I'll be using the gizzmo again, great bit of kit they are.
