Hi all,
Have just fitted a Newman Phase 4 cam and their carbide tipped rockers/followers to my standard Pinto unleaded head.
The trouble is, once the valve clearances are set the cam lobes don't align properly with the centre of the cam follower pad, and the cam binds
on the edge of the follower pad. It's the same using a standard follower.
I also noticed that when the valves are fully open, there is not much more than 30 thou total gap between spring coils, so it appears that the valves
may be too short? The followers/ball studs appear to be in the correct position i.e the follower is level and the ball stud is about mid way and
isn't wound right up.
Frustrating as I contacted Newman before buying the cam/followers, and they said the cam would suit my stock engine(with bike carbs and tubular
exhaust), and would have no clearance issues. They also stated I could use the standard springs, which was ideal for me as I didn't want to have
to remove the head again (lazy I know).
Any thoughts would be welcome before I contact Newman tomorrow for advice. May well end up changing it for a Kent FR32, hoping I won't have the
same issues using a slightly a lower lift cam?

The Pinto valves can be a fraction to long almost never to short
It sounds to me that you may need the spring platforms cut back then shim to get correct fitted spring length
Pinto valve geometry is complex and is never simple
