MT75; difficult second gear

Since buying the car it's always been a bit hit and miss changing down the gears from 3rd to 2nd; it feels as though it's in but will then pop out of gear when the clutch is lifted.

It seems to have got worse, resulting yesterday in me nearly being T-boned at a turning as the car jumped out of second leaving me stranded in the road.

It changes up the box perfectly with no crashing or grinding. The engine is a 2.0 zetec on bodies and the gearbox is an MT75.

The gearbox has a short-lever fitted; I'm assuming a replacement lower lever; which from reading some posts on various forums today can cause the car to be a bit iffy and notchy when changing gear.

I found a post on WSCC from a couple of years ago of a chap that had a similiar problem but unfortunately the thread never gets resolved (and I'm not a member on there so can't find any subsequent posts).

I'm obviously hoping the gearbox isn't goosed, so have been advised to check the following in the order below prior to removal:

Check linkage/stick for play (potentially remove quickshift and refit standard part)
Checking clutch cable incase clutch is dragging (how do I adjust the cable on an mt75 please?)
Replace gearbox oil

I welcome any other ideas or assistance with the clutch adjustment

Check the clutch has full travel. Mine is set up using an adjuster on the bell housing, just a drilled bolt style arrangment. The gearbox does use a special oil, suspect it is ATF.

Thanks for the reply, do you have any photos?

I looked at dinnertime; my clutch cable goes in an arc around the O/S engine mount and seems to sit inside a box on the O/S of the gearbox

The clutch adjustment is a simple two bolt affair. You slacken the one on the gearbox side and do the one up on the engine side a little then nip the first one back up.

Is the biting point high ?

Oil is specific for the Mt75

This is the oil in it. one and a bit litres to do a change.

Any box is jumping out of gear on tye over run won't be fixed by fiddling with the clutch or fresh oil.

To me it looks one of three possible internal faults all of which are easiest fixed by swapping in another box, as after box starts jumping out of gear usually the synchro hub gets knackered pretty quickly even if that wasn't the original fault.

When the box is out check that a spigot bearing is fitted to the crankshaft and they gear lever is not fouling the chassis.

Yep has new bearing in the end of the crank.

Once had a gearbox that popped out of 2nd gear following a rebuild, it was fine before. I feared the worst and anticipated the trouble of removing it and sending it back to be sorted.

Took minutes to sort, weeks to diagnose.

After much fiddling it all turned out to be simple. On refitting I had not adjusted the remote linkage quite correctly and when you lifted off the throttle the slight movement of the engine/box resulted in the remote catching tunnel top (witness mark was just visible) and popping it into neutral.

It did do it occasionally prior to removing my rear axle and re-fitting but seems hugely worse since doing that. I need to remove the tunnel-top anyway to check the linkage so whilst it's off I'll go for a drive and check for it catching, however I'm fairly sure iirc that the shifter hole is quite abit higher than the tunnel top itself.

I appreciate your suggestion though Paul - all help!

Fixed it fixed it!

Thanks Paul, not quite what you suggested. But similar.

The gearstick itself was JUST touching the side of the shifter surround on the gearbox. 5 minutes with a dremel and it works beautifully.
