Shortened zetec sump
leon51274 - 6/8/14 at 12:44 PM

Hi all

I've got a diy shortened sump on my silvertop zetec (pics attached) I'm a little dubious as to whether this is up to the job due to my recent engine failure! To cut a long story short I ended up with a completely knackered engine due to oil starvation, crank, head and cams. I had filled the oil up to the full mark on the dipstick which equated to 3 litre, however my engine builder seemed to think this was not enough oil?

The sump has no baffles inside and the sump has been cut at an angle.

Any opinions appreciated.

Cheers
Leon

Imho 3L isn't enough.

The capacity should be increased by boxing the back. look at Scholar and Dunnell for pictures of how it should be done. They are around 5L capacity.

I definitely wouldn't be happy with 3l.

Assuming the engine is going in level, why was the bottom edge not made parallel with the engine?, that would give another 1/3 litre and not effect how low it sits.

*Unless the pics give a bad perspective.

My thoughts exactly! Unfortunately this was already done when I got the car.

Flog it on ebay and build your own from a blacktop alloy upper/steel lower.

Ditto...
I'm not happy with modern engines small oil capacity.
Let alone reduce it even more.
Looking at your sump it was (is) a recipe for engine failure.
Without baffling, any sweeping turn would cause the already reduced oil level by what's on the passages, Head, so slosh out of reach from the pickup.
Baffling and increasing the oil quantity mac reduce the possibility of this recurring.

Here are a couple of photo's of my Dunnell sump, Scholar is virtually identical but less expensive.

It is fully baffled and holds almost 4.5 litres from dry, just over 4 litres for an oil change.

Its been fitted to both Silvertops and Blacktops (with the £14 Scholar main bearing bolts and spacers) since 2001 with no issues whatsoever.

Why risk it.

Ok Cheers chaps, looks like I may delve into a dunnell one or similar.

Contacted Scholar a week or so ago and they replied that they don't have any more Zetec low line sumps.

Not sure if this is a temporary situation, but the reply seemed to imply they weren't doing them any more at all.

So could be Dunnel or Raceline is the only option (other than home-made) - unless anyone knows different?
