Ultrasonic cleaner sitting in the garage at the moment (larger 'industrial' type) and want to clean some carb bits.

What are the collective using in their ultrasonic cleaners ?


I've heard everything from vinegar & hot water to TFR at the moment and would appreciate some advice.

Start off with something non-agressive like water and washing-up liquid, if its not got a heater then use warm water

I've got a small unit that has a heater in it. The instructions recomend using the companies detergent product in warm water, however, there is also mention of using dishwasher detergent if the product is really grubby. So far I have only used warm water and mild detergent with good effect.

From my understanding any fluid will tranfer the ultrasonic waves across the tank and any additive will increase the effect by breaking down grease and grime.

I would also think it may depend on what the cleaning tank is made of as to what you can use safely, my small unit is made of stainless and also how delicate the item being cleaned - for safety I would always start 'mild' and ramp up any additive if needed.

Other products I have seen mentioned include water based degreasing fluid - 'Gunk' type stuff.

Weak Citric acid solution works well for jewelry, vinegar diluted with warm water also works.
Acids are good for cleaning corroded metals, base solutions degrease well but corrode metals..

I bought some cheap cocacola and left my carbs in a bucket with cola for a week, came out nice and clean!
then a quick go in the dishwasher
and 30 mins in the oven

obviousley my wife has no idea !!

We use HSC (Hard Surface Cleaner) which is just industrial floor cleaner.

Also in the process of rigging up a soda blaster, so more experimenting to do
