Any one got a schematic of the main wiring I need to connect to the engine to get it running?
I assume this would be the same for most dizzy based engines.
Any good books out there?
Cheers Ben
To get any dizzy based engine going:
Wire from Battery + to Coil + (12-14 ga)
Connected while running, remove it from the battery to shut the engine down.
Coil - to Dizzy (12-14 ga)
Battery cable from Battery + to Starter Solenoid (2-02 ga)
Starter wire from Solenoid SW terminal to the are of the Battery +. When you touch this wire to the Bat + it will energize the solenoid. (12-14
ga)
Battery - to engine block (2-02 ga or ground strap)
If you are running an electric fuel pump then you need to have power to it too.
Does this help?
David
Excellent.
I assume you mean guage by ga?
What about connecting the alternator?
I know I don't need to do this, just want to get all the engine wiring done in one go.
Cheers Ben
ben, when it's sorted do post up and let us all know that aren't that far along...
where did you get hte dizzy kit from in the end?
Ned.
Ned
You have picked up on the one flaw in my plan! No Dizzy!
I have found 2 scrappys in Aldershot with some MKII Cavs, said I can cut out the bits I want.
Do you want me to get you one?
Ordered the inlet bits yesterday from QED.
i have the right dizzy (you can borrow it to get the engine running if you can't find one!), but not the loom, wiring and connectors, if you do
see any of the right bits, get them if you can and i'll reimburse accordingly..
Ned.
ps which bits from qed and how much? u2u or offline if you prefer not to tell everyone how much you're spending!!

So everything other than the dizzy & Coil then?
I got the manifold (water), gaskets for both sides, and fitting kit, incl. all nuts for both sides and Heater pipe blank, and exhaust gasket.
I think it comes to £140 incl. VAT, but not 100% as haven't seen the invoice yet. Will drop a message when I know.
I was told to go for the water jacketed version as I am running carbs and a dizzy, apparently dry is better for bodies & engine management.
On a single alternator wire system, the wire would go for the alt to the same side of the solenoid that the Battery + goes to. If it is a 2 wire
alernator, the second wire goes to an idiot light. If you hav an ammeter or volt meter, the the big wire goes through it first ( I hate wiring up
alternators, but ya gotta do it).
Above, I talk about a temporary hook up. If you are making it permanent, you need a wire from the Bat+ to the ign sw +, then the coil + wire goes to
the ign terminal on the ign switch. The small solenoid wire goes from the start position of the switch to the solinoid...
Yes, ga=gauge.
David
Thanks David
ben , dizzy and coil aswell if there are enough donors in the scrappies, doesn't hurt to have a spare, besides the one i do have isn't
tested, not that i suspect it doesn't work, but you know what i mean..
Ned.
Ok, will probably go and have a look tomorrow lunch time.
Ned, if you are having trouble sourcing VX stuff, almost any Bosch ignition system will do. I was in the same situation as yourself (dizzy, but none of the other bits) and used the rest of the stuff off a VW Polo instead...
useful to know, thanks stu..
