English axle refurb?
Boylers11 - 31/3/15 at 05:52 PM

I had an issue recently, which some on here may recall. Basically, a rear wheel bearing failed and spat the half shaft out.
I've since removed the axle and stripped it down to check for internal damage, of which there appears to be none.
Obviously I'll be putting a new gasket and bearing on, but I wondered if there's anything else I should replace while it's in pieces? Diff bearings etc?
It wasn't making and strange noises when it was working, but thought if there's a part worth replacing, I may as well do it now to make life easier!
Thanks in advance

Might be worth doing the pinion seal. Having said that I didn't bother if it's not weeping.

Front pinion seal, as to do it later is a pain and sods law says it will weep just after you put it all back together. Also I would consider upgrading your open diff to a slippy diff. It transformed my car and was well worth the cost IMHO.

Thanks! How much did it cost you to do that please? Any links to websites for the parts needed?

Rally design sell the lsd. I have a Quaife ATB. Give them a call and tell them what you have, and they will happily advise you. I got mine on a group buy on here, and it cost £340 i think. Plus another £150 or so to have Procomp fit it ( a few years ago now).

Talk to Fostec in the north east too. There's nothing they don't know about these axles

There is a crush tube - a tube with a bulge - that is squeezed when tightening the nut to set the preload.

Pretty sure i have posted the lb ft figure and how to do it using a steel bar and spring guage.

Although the crush tube should be renewed, in locost style i reused it, put it over a steel rod and hammer down on the bulge to flatten it a bit to lengthen the tube, it doesnt need much, a fraction of a mm.

Oh, and it is common practise to dab a blob or two of weld between bearing and axle shaft to prevent the problem you had occuring.

... and with the seal, if there is a worn area on the shaft, dont tap it in fully so the lip runs over an unworn area.
