Duratec Engine change

So the Duratec I have in is smoking. I bought an engine a while ago which I was going to re-build with forged pistons/rods etc. this engine came with a goosed top end (run on LPG apparently) so I've bought yet another engine as the smoking engine is getting worse.
So the question is do I stick the most recent purchase in and risk having an engine similar to what is in or do I give it a re-fresh (new rings, bearings etc)?? I don't have a budget at the moment for forged pistons/rods.

Clean it up hone the bores and re ring it make sure you clean the pistons really well cheap and will be spot on again

Try a few Duratec engine builders - I found a set of brand new rods, pistons, rings and bearings stripped from a new crate engine for £35 + p&p.

Cheers for the input guys.
I'm going to take the chance and drop this engine in and rebuild the bottom end of the engine thats currently in as I know thats burning oil.
