I have been told a TD04 16T turbo is what I need to fit to a CBR900 (97 engine)
But struggling to find one (plenty of TD04 12T's but I dont know what the XXt bit means... and also a TD04HL 16t... whats the HL for?)
Can anyone tell me any other turbos which are of a similar spec that would do the job? And what car I could find them from?

Subaru Impreza is a td04. Good solid and reliable turbos. They will flow upto 270bhp on a 2.0 or a 2.5 l scooby. They where very cheap but prices are rising. I am sticking one on a zetec as I think it's a good match for a gt25.
There are several td04 turbos. The 13t is the subaru one (I'm using one) but it has a different flange to the other td04's.
The other td04's have standard t25 flange. They use them on saabs, volvos and I think some mitsi (and no doubt others). I think the 13t, 16t
etc refers to the compressor wheel size but not 100%. No idea what the HL means.
No doubt someone else will come along and explain it all.
Turbo part number
This is a low compression one, around 7-8 psi if you want to just bolt one on with playing around with compression
The number before the T is indeed basically the size of the compressor wheel. 16T is what most people use, the volvo guys upgrade these to the 18 or
19T for more power.
Best to get a Volvo one since it's the same bolt pattern as all the T3 turbos so you have room to upgrade if you want instead of the Subaru one
which is 3 bolt holes on a weird flange.
I believe the HL is something to do with the compressor fins and basically it makes a tiny bit more power than non HL
I believe all the Subaru ones are the same size as a 13T even though they just say TD04 on the compressor housing
Yeah the scooby turbo has an odd flange but that doesn't change much. They can be upgraded with the vf series such as the vf43 that will flow 380bhp
Hm
Which ones will work ok on my engine? the 16T and HL16T seem to be quite hard to come by.
which other models will work ok?
There seems to be a lot of 13G, 9B, 13T.... (9B being very common)
I have no clue about what style/size turbo I need
And I need 2 the same....

I'm only wanting to run around 8psi at the moment, with the view of maybe getting up to 12psi further down the line.... but would like to keep
the engine fairly reliable.
I just dont have a clue how you know which turbo will do what
The T28 looks to be a pretty big turbo? is it not too big for my engine?
If the td04 of the impreza would work well, thats probably my best bet as theyre pretty easy to come by.
Or the td04 9b from the 3000gt.... plenty of them too

As you say scooby turbos are easy to come by so if you kill one you won't have to look far for another.
Have a look around and see what others have had success with ?
I think the td05 has a 16g compressor wheel.

Haha, unfortunately not a twin turbo no.... if thats what you were thinking
My father in law has a fisher fury cbr900, so obviously we can have one with more power than the other
Right.... before I click buy on a pair of these
TD04HL 13T shall I buy them?!
My zx9 used one of those and made 181bhp at 7psi I now run 15psi with some engine upgrades at 225bhp
What's wrong with the 12ts would they be ok ??
Too small, the 13 is a bit small, 15g or a 16t is usually ideal.
Even when running low boost ?
Yes, you will get a fast spool but will really choke your engine at higher rpm because the turbo is small and doesn't flow enough through the
compressor and turbine. Turbo size it related to horsepower potential because a bigger turbo flows more. 8psi on a 12 might add 40bhp, same boost
pressure on a 13t might add 50-60 and the same pressure on a 16t might add 80bhp. So turbo size really effects things.
A lot of people ask if a certain boost pressure is okay on standard internals but it depends on turbo size, 8psi on a gt30 is going to make much more
power than 8psi on a 16t.
While we are here..
What size turbo for a steady 350 on a 2.0 zetec? Got me eye on an exhaust manifold with a t3 flange... 8.0 comp ratio??
The vw 1.8t guys seem to be using a garrett t series 50 trim at 20ish psi for 350ish bhp. They are a pretty cheap journal bearing turbo turbo. But a
garrett gt3071 or gt3076 would be a good choice.
EDIT: Not worth dropping compression ratio below 9:1

Like this? Looks a bit overkill and the shipping is eye watering!

Or, is this one better suited?
