BMW S1000rr build, quaife/ elite racing transaxle wanted
Phil ashton - 17/5/15 at 06:20 PM

Is anyone thinking of using/ currently using a bmw s1000rr engine in a BEC?
I have just done a job where I ended up with a few of these awesome engines.
I plan to use one in a fiat 133 chassis, an abarth bodied hill climb car.
Am I mad? Should be a lot of fun, rear engined, 200hp!!
I am looking for a quaife or elite racing transaxle if anyone has one, would consider some sort of swap for an engine!
Cheers
Phil

I may not be 100% on this. But as far as I'm aware nobody has yet got past the electronics in order to make it work. And the weak gearboxes.
Otherwise it's very powerful for a 1000cc lump

Phil ashton - 17/5/15 at 07:08 PM

I have all the standard electronics off the bike, on the one I am using, but I am told alpha racing sell all the bits to get one running!
I have an alpha racing abs unit that takes that part out of the ecu without a fault code. Apart from changing the handlebar switches to normal dash type switches, everything should be near enough standard.

I would be interested what class a fiat chassis, abarth bodied, bike engines care would be in?
Hill climbing has so many classes!

daniel mason - 17/5/15 at 08:11 PM

4a.sports libre <1700cc amongst the radicals etc. If bieng competative is your main concern then the type of car,or class entering needs careful consideration!
And I think there's a lot more fancy electronics to sort than that

daniel mason - 17/5/15 at 08:20 PM

You will also need a15 or a92 avons depending on what events your doing. Which will make a huge difference to performance!
Why do you need an elite transaxle?
If your putting the engine in the back then mount it as per the bike to a quaife chain drive diff.
Or if front mounting then use a propshaft to a rear axle!
Most libre cars like minis etc use mid engine/chain drive. As do some radicals.
What's the target weight for the car?

You could always install the engine with a standalone aftermarket ecu; mbe, Omex etc you can forget about having to bypass all the bmw shite then.
I would say it must be the king of the litre engines or at least until people start crashing the new Ninja.

Pretty sure there one or two S1000RR powered single seaters performing in the current hillclimb season.

eit: Isn't Harry Pick/Gary Hills' OMS powered with one?

Have been looking into a standalone ecu as a mate also has this engine for a project, but he doesn't have all the electronics off the bike as I do.
If it ends up being a simpler route, then it's a no brainer.
With regard to weight, simply as little as possible. Could 800kg be achievable? Possibly. It's a tiny chassis, fibreglass body, roll cage etc and transmission.
It's my first toe dip into Motorsport, apart from karting, so I am genuinely clueless. I just thought it would be a fun car to build

daniel mason - 17/5/15 at 10:27 PM

I think the oms is the only car currently running the s1000rr but I didn't want to say anything regarding it as I know it's only done a couple of events and therefore untested.
All the top 1100cc hillclimbers use aftermarket ecu's other than 'Bradley' in the jedi and he would if funds allowed!
The aftermarket ecu's cannot conquer all the electronics in the s1000rr at the moment but I'm sure they will get there before too long.
Research is key to all this but a k6 or k8 gsxr or 04-06 R1 or 08 onwards blade would be almost at the same level but with less cost!
If your determined in that chassis and to run libre @800kgs then a hayabusa or zzr1400 would be a better option In my opinion

Also if you need any help with anything or want to pop up and look at a mid engined hillclimb car then feel free to message me!
If hillclimbing/sprinting is Definately something your going to do (it's a fantastic way into Motorsport) then the uphillracers forum is one to join! Some guys on there know everything needed to know regarding hillclimbing

I have a s1000r (the naked version) as my road bike, it is staggering!!! Best bike ive ever owned, blisteringly fast, awesome suspension, fantastic brakes and amazing electronic gizmos. Id love one in a BEC, but im sure there are lots of things to sort out due to the gizmos. It has 3 riding modes that effect power out put and the kick in of the ABS and wheelie control, this is also linked to the lean angles the bike and alters throttle performance based on all these inputs. I can vouch for this as you can feel the power being restricted when the front tries to come up when the bike hits 9krpm in what ever gear or what ever speed you are doing, and depending on what mode you are in effects how intrusive it is. A truely awesome engine, but it will need some clever electronics to get over all the aids and release the full power of the engine. Good luck!!

So if I read your post correctly, it has some sort of giro/ tilt switch that limits power depending on lean angle or front wheel elevation.
So if I install the original ecu in a car at the correct angle. Then I should get full power. Obviously a car won't wheelie or lean so power should not reduce.

daniel mason - 2/6/15 at 08:35 AM

Speak with Steve Owen at oms racing. He's put one in an oms 28 and made a debut at gurston last weekend. I don't think speed trap figures were up With the gsxr's but it was obviously used as a test day and seemed to run trouble free from what I understand.

CosKev3 - 2/6/15 at 08:38 AM

I suppose a lot will depend on if the engine ecu is separate to the bike loom/sensors?

If its got one ecu that controls everything, ABS/engine/lights/launch control etc it could be troublesome, unless you can get certain things deleted out of the ECU like ABS etc?

Phil ashton - 2/6/15 at 08:44 AM

I have a Alpha racing box that deletes the abs. They also do plugs that delete other superfluous bits like side stand etc.
they seem to have that side covered. Although there is bound to be gremlins.
Interested that someone ran one last week. First time out?

daniel mason - 2/6/15 at 09:00 AM

Yes Steve Owen from oms racing

dont think it would work quite like that, for example there is a simple tilt switch in the r1 if you drop it, in the car you have to glue it up or replace it as you get different kinds of centrifugal forces in a car as it doesnt lean like a bike, om assuming the bmw is more complicated. btw im not trying to put you off as it would be awesome if you got it working, just dont underestimate the amount of work needed in sorting electrics out to release its full potential. The 08-10 CBR for example took a lot of time to work out how to release all of its power, and its still easy to end up running it with errors and the resulting reduced power without even realising.

This is a great forum! As a bit of an new contributor, it's great to hear the experience of others. Especially on subjects that I know only a little.
I will try to get this engine going as I have a couple and am interested in their potential. It may take some time!
If anyone is interested in a co-project, that would be nice, I have a spare engine!
The body for the car is being made at the moment so engine/ drive is next. I fancied a quaife transaxle but mud mounting the engine would be better weight distribution.
I did plan for this to usable on the road( hence the fiat chassis ) but I guess we will see if that's possible.
Loving the contributions. Sorry I am a bit slow sometimes, I have another project on the go aswell. I'm fitting a Subaru ee20 diesel in my be split screen. Similar ecu problems so great learning experience.
Thanks

Any developments on this yet boys. Would love this in my new toy.

daniel mason - 22/5/16 at 11:15 PM

Just drop a well proven unit in your project an enjoy it! The last thing you want is expensive failures
