Pinto Question

Hi, Just got the donor car at the weekend and having a look at the engine.

The car is a 1988 Sierra Sapphire GL 4 door saloon (5Spd)

The engine has got a '205' marking on the side of it. Would this make it a '205' block. I thought these only came with the DOHC models, mine is a SOHC non injected pinto.

I feel that I have started on a never ending walk !!!!

Hi

Most 2 litre Sierras/Transits & P100's from late 1988 onwards used the 205 block in either carb or injected form.

This is an April 88 Registered sierra.

Is there any other way to tell the block type?

Also how do I tell what type gearbox it is?

Hi

If it has 205 on the block then it is a 205 block. As for the gear box it is probably a type 9 as I don't think the MT75 was fitted to the pinto, it is easy to tell as the MT75 is an all alloy construction with the bell housing as an integral part of the casting.

The type 9 has a seperate bell housing and is of cast iron construction with an alloy tail housing.

Guess it is a 205 with a Type 9 then. Apparently from searching here the type 9 has reverse top left (push down).

Another question : Mine apparently only does LRP and wont eat unleaded. Can I bolt on a head straight from a SOHC injection (did all SOHC injections take unleaded?) and pop carbs back on? If so how available are these? (If anyone has a spare close to me that would be good!)

Unleaded shouldn't be a major problem. From 84 onwards ford mainly produce heads capable of running unleaded. I ran an '82' 2.0 unleaded for 250k as a taxi with no problems. Just required timing adjustment.

As for fitting injection head the inlet ports are (inj) pear shaped and the (carb) round. So there is an issue with regard to getting a good seal with the manifold. This has however been 'Discussed' at length in previous posts.

Cheers JGG, coincidentaly just read your comments on an earlier thread on same subject, must do searches before asking in future.

As for post 84 heads being ok for unleaded does that apply for all after this year or certain ones. What I am trying to ask is do I need to worry about sticking unleaded into mine?

Also going back to my original question on the '205' block on a non injected SOHC, would this also imply that the head was 'unleaded capable' !!

Next to No4 spark plug. Unleaded 2 litres are L, P, PP, R or RR. Mine is an 87 and has the L stamp on it.

if possible you should find yourself an injection head, they flow much better than the carb type .

And yes the head is a straight swap although you may need to look at the timing etc.

any idea what you are looking to use for fuel ? most put on twin 40's or 45's but I have also seen some very good installations using the orginal injection system.

If you really fancy going a bit wild and have some spare monay - you could always fit the cosworth head

there are a couple of very good books on tuning the pinto, well worth the outlay. I'm sure someone else will name them for me, as the names have slipped my mind.
