Interesting little find for me yesterday, noticed a fairly innocuous chunk of foam missing from my Pipercross filter, figured I must have caught it
with the bonnet.
Hole in filter
Closer inspection showed the mesh behind was missing too!
Mesh missing!
Better have a look down the throttle body then...
Down tb
Holy crap, bits of mesh at sitting on top of valves!!!
Mesh in head
Fished it out and all ok, but bugger me, never thought I'd see something like that.
All about attention to detail, and that's a good spot. Nice one...
ROTF ;-) one for the scrapbook.
Yeah well spotted!
Would have been a new engine job if it was mine going by recent luck
Melted a piston in my daily driver, then last week spun a bearing in the kit car.
Brings back memories, that sinking feeling when you realize it may need the engine out

Well spotted. I had similar with an ally airbox that was made from too thin a grade and broke up in places with fatigue from the vibration. Luckily
all the bits were in the airbox and not inlets.
Have you matched up the bits with the hole to be sure you've got it all?
Yip, had a tube hooked up to the hoover and sooked out round the valves. Nothing came out (had a pair of the wife's tights clamped over the
hoover tube to catch any swarf sucked up).
Wife is probably wondering why I'm skulking off to the garage with a pair of her tights and the hoover.
do you know what caused it to do that? i would be calling pipercorss about that!

Likewise, Any ideas why it had broken like that? I was literally just about to order one of those filters too.

I really don't know how it got like that, the thing must have had quite a dunt to be broken off. Interestingly enough the rest of the mesh is
also split. Don't know if it's down to fatigue of the metal that it's brittle, but to take a chunk of foam plus mesh, it's like a
broom handle has been shoved in it, as I'm driving so that it got sucked into the inlet. Don't think that's what happened though.
Don't remember any broom handles.
Wouldn't be the worst idea for others to prod and poke your own filters, check their integrity.
Looks like a clean, almost deliberate hole in the filter! Good job you caught it before any damage was done though.
Good spot/find
I've heard of and seen the foam melt before, but never seen the mesh do that
Think I'd have a chat with the manufacturer and see what they say ?
Do the ends of the strands of mesh look like they have suffered stress ?
A few years ago, I had a Transit running twin 40's. It often backfired through the carbs. One day I noticed two holes through the mesh and foam but the mesh had discoloured as if it had been burnt. The foam was just missing. I put it down to the backfire blowing a hole.
