On a pinto's crank there are 4 timeing marks, which one do you line to crank up with?

the first mark going clockwise is 0 degrees advance unless i am mistaken

Should be the bigest/deepest/longest. You will also find timing marks on the cam pulley/head AND a mark on the outer mounting face of the distributor where the cap fits onto and the rotor arm centre line should be pointing at this for static timing when crank shaft and cam shaft are lined up. A very desireable pointer when changing cam belts.

On my crank pulley going clockwise the first mark is 16* going down in 4* increments to TDC. There is a faint line in between them, presumably to show 2* intervals. Which engine are you using as the timing is different for different years and capacities. 8* BTDC is a reasonable figure as a starter for engines running unleaded. If you are just building it or replacing the timing belt line everything up with the TDC marks and set the timing after with your timing light.
