If you fit a good gearkit (BGH, Quaife, SPC, Tranx etc..) in the type 9 box, it'll take that power/torque no problem.

Rx8 6 speed aisin AZ6 box with a freddy686868 (search turbosport) adaptor plate.

Same box used on 200sx s15 engines so can take 250hp (also used in mx5 mk3, brz/gt86 and is200 but rx8 is the only one with the same input shaft diameter and spline as ford so can use zetec flywheel and clutch). First gear a bit short but 2-6 similar to 1-5 in a quaife/bgh/tranx close ratio, all for £200, and similar size to type 9 and helical not straight cut so quiet.

If you want to stick with type 9 spc do a semi helical with good ratios.

If ypur box is a stock 2.0L i4 type 9 then 1St to 2nd is a big jump and you will be luck to get 200hp out of it seeing as you engine will have significant torque (which is what kills boxes, not power), if v6 box better but still not rated to 250hp by a long way.

The top of the range BGH E8 Type 9 is good for 250 ft lb. You need to work down from there, stock Type 9 will struggle with 200 ft lb.

"putting x amount of bhp though a type 9" is pub talk, you need to find out the estimated torque you are expecting to output.

I ran 300bhp through a standard type 9 for thee years, had it upgraded to a bgh to change gear ratios.

It was ok at 300bhp mate?

Jon, the std type nine has a truly awful 1st gear. It just annoys me every time I use it and while second is OK to pull away in, it's not ideal. So I am fitting a hd box off a v6 with a long 1st to solve this and to add some strength..

While some are lucky to have no problems putting big power through an old type 9, would you really want to put 250+ through a 30year old box designed to tow caravans up a hill in a 90hp car that has 120,000 miles on it? How do you know it's not shagged before you put it in?

If you can afford it, get an spc/bgh/firstmotion upgraded type 9 box with at least a long 1st. But you are talking well over a grand. The cheapest way to a box that will definitely take the power is as mentioned the 6 speed rx8 with a plate to allow it to fit your zetec. First will be crap but 2 to 6 will be pretty useable and, as said, similar ratios to the expensive boxes mentioned above.

I have the IS200 variant of the AZ6 in my 3SGE engined car. It has very similar, but not identical, ratios to the RX8 box.
My 1st gear is better but still a bit low. The other 5 ratios are superb.
It is bigger than the Type 9 though. I managed to slim down the thin end by cutting off a few protruberances but it's still BIG!
I got he box on ebay for £20 and a spare one for £1.20
Yes. £1.20
I had to cut 10mm off the front face and redrill the top two bolt holes.
I then had to move the gearlever forward five inches with a home-spun reverse remote.
Worth it though. It's a great box!
