Does anyone local to Waterlooville have the tools/knowledge to check/re-time my blacktop zetec engine?

Cams or ignition?

Take the rocker cover off, turn the crank to tdc on number 1 and put a piece of 5mm bar through the slots at the back of the cams. The slots are slightly off centre so will only fit one way.

There's a tool screws in the side of the block under the breather if your struggling for tdc.

If you find the cam timing is out DO NOT using the timing bar to hold the cams while you undo the sprocket bolts, I've seen a few cams with lumps out of them using this method. Use a sprocket holding tool
