Morning!
I spent part of yesterday thinking about potential mid engined projects and came across the Ali blocked 130bhp 2.0 20v and 150bhp 16v FSI engines.
They are found in various VAG cars fitted to transaxle gear boxes.
I can't find much information about them on the usual VW sites due to the existence of the 1.8T engine who's weight doesn't matter so
much in a normal car. Would anyone here happen to know more about them such as:
- their weight
-their potential to further tunning
-how they would compare to a Zetec se or duratec attached to a Audi or VW box. Obviously they wouldn't require adapter plates and flywheels
making up which is a plus!
There's also the 1.6 FSI with 115bhp but as far as I can tell only came with the wrong type box.
I may be wrong but I think they are very complicated electronic wise. Huge injector rail pressure and all that .....
Not worth just finding a big 2wd Audi with a 1.8t or V6/v8????
I've just been looking on eBay at a seller who mates big yanky v8s to Renault or Audi transaxles for gt40 builds... Not cheap mind..
This all came about from the rwdzetec fb page where a dude has bolted a zetec to a Renault box no adapters!
Most people plug the holes in the heads and convert back to port-injected beacuse the FSI injectors require high voltage and specialised drive
circuitry - hard to find ECUs to drive them, but if you're using the OEM ECU - less of an issue.
No idea on the weight, but things to note on the transaxles are they're generally quite high over the diff (raises your CofG) - it would be nice
if they've corrected that by putting the diff on top but I doubt it.

The V8 is all aluminium and while I'm about to get a real weight (got a crane and scales, and engine) the 4.2 is meant to be 175kg.that's on a par with the 1.8t iron block. It's one of the lighter v8s on the market. I'm going that way. The box to handle the torque is not light though, another 55kg on paper.
I know for a fact that the intake mani weighs 16kg!
The 1uz is a similar weight from what I can find online. I'll have to stalk your posts to see how your getting on. What box code are you thinking of?
I have the strengthened 01E 6 speed from an A6 3.0 TDi
AUDI 01E TRANSAXLE WITH LSD 6 SPEED GEARBOX FOR MID ENGINE CAR V8
Wow
Other GBs may be the same, but the VAG trans-axle looks long to the rear of the driveshaft outputs to me!
quote:the original setup had the drive shafts angled a long way forward, since the engine was in front. not too difficult the angle them backward in a midi setup

That's the box I have, but I paid £70
Yes, it will be the rearmost point in the car.
Still not found any weights of the engines but I have a friend who fits newer engines to his Mk1 golf race cars so I may ask him. The 2.0 20v makes
about 160-170bhp on throttle bodies but as said the FSI engine needs injector ports blocking off and also different Pistons to be tuned. Stories of
carbon build up puts me off the FSI and both have valve issues at high revs.
I'd love a V8 but compared to a Duratec I'd have to decide weather I'd rather roughly 100kg less weight with 150bhp or twice the power
and and awesome sound. I'd also have to spend more on brakes, have a stronger/heavier chassis and put the power down somehow. Im thinking of some
new Mini steels or the light "Imola" style alloys but they are only 15x5.5.
The easiest and cheapest method would be to build it with a FWD duratec or sigma in the style of a Riot/Midlana and worry about a full body later on.
I've already got a 1.7 puma which I planned on using but I'd like 150bhp with the option to go further which a sigma would cost
significantly more in the long run.

What do you have planned for the clutch?
coyoteboy - 15/8/16 at 01:04 PMI got an 034 motorsports flex plate to fly adapter (alu body, steel friction surface, 6lb all in ish ) and it converts it to a standard 240mm clutch.
